We don't need to worry about Brexit stockpiling, we need to worry about...

Exports. With imports we will have some teething problems and then we will be able to get things moving in again. The problem is going to be exporting. France and Ireland are having to build new facilities and recruit/train new border staff to deal with our exports. Look out especially for the meat industry and luxury fishing industry. And financial services. That's where we'll be fucked.

Its not hard to fuck up a carrot if your soil is unsuitable for carrots, or you are on a water meter.
I live in a city so I'm lucky to have a garden at all but the soil is basically made of cat shit. Its infected with rust, scab and silver leaf fungus, plus another lethal plant disease I haven't been able to identify. I used to have an allotment but the site was decommissioned due to toxic waste from a local factory chimney.
I'm also pre diabetic so a high carb diet is out of the question. None of the 'we used to grow our own in WW2' suggestions are practical for the majority of people.

Its not hard to fuck up a carrot in a raised bed full of the neighbour's cat poo. Lettuce ditto. And I'm squeamish about slugs. The sprouts are ok for a tiny window if you can ignore all the grey moth eaten bits. We end up with a mammoth glut of courgettes (this is kind of derailing my own thread) for the week we are away on holiday and then like everyone else round here we cannot GIVE away the marrows. We still have marrow chutney from years back. The raspberry canes were actually genuinely good until they got old. We need to replace them. But we cannot live on just raspberries.

I think I will stockpile on bog roll having seen some the replies.
My point was really to say that it's in our interest to keep imports going, so we will (they will be more expensive, though). Meanwhile, our competitors stand to benefit from making it difficult
for us to export and without trade deals and out of the EU we will face tariffs on most of our exports worldwide. That's going to hurt us economically. Plus the WTO is in a bit of bother with Trump - who has gone a bit quiet about Brexit of late.

@userschmoozer x posted and you are so right

For those saying you don't export anything, I bet you use education and healthcare that is paid for by the tax revenue paid by people and companies who export. I should think you'll miss that.
Yes, but I'm not directly exporting. I doubt any exporters really want me wandering along to give them advice or to share my worry with them...

allthatmalarkey · 16/02/2019 18:32

Well, indeed, that's probably a sensible response rather than giving in to negative feelings about something you can't directly change. And a lot of the exporters actually know (even Mr Dyson has decided to move his HQ to Singapore), but when they tell Brexiters it gets called fearmongering (see @Namechangedforthis79) above) and interfering in politics. Sigh.

I voted remain actually.

We might be ok for toilet rolls after all. Smile
