To think that the choice of glasses for kids is rubbish

Ds needs glasses so we were choosing some yesterday.

In the whole opticians only 4 columns were for children and these needed to cover both boys and girls from age 2 (or small at least) right through to when they need adult specs.

We managed to find 1 pair that were ok thank goodness but only 1 there was no actual choices for him.

Surely there should be more choice, are other opticians more kitted out for kids or are they all much of a muchness? He only needs them part time but I can’t imagine having to choose from that measly selection for years of my child’s life if they wore them all the time!

There's actually quite a lot of choice and I say this as someone whose child started wearing glasses before 2. Just find a decent independent optician, not spec savers, and be prepared to go to a few until you find one who wants to actually be useful. The continuity of care you will get from having a regular contact and someone who knows your child is invaluable when they break their glasses and when you need cooperation. They also aren't that much more expensive as the cost of lenses and much of the frame is covered by NHS, so you're paying £40 -60 on top for frames which actually fit and won't leave horrible marks from glasses being too heavy for their face.

Also try asking at the opticians for more sizes/frames. Our spec savers have a big selection out but also have masses more of each frame in different sizes and colours in a cupboard. Last time we picked glasses for my DD she wanted something very specific and they just went through the cupboard pulling out every blue metal frame they had for her to look at.

we go to a bog-standard Specsavers and there's probably a couple of dozen styles to choose from, some in multiple colours, including an older kids/young teens selection. we've been really pleased.

My DS has worn glasses full time from being 15 months old.
We went to Specsavers as you get two pairs from them and there seemed to be plenty of choice for kids.
As he was a baby we didn't really have much choice in the frames as he needed baby frames, but we're happy with what he has and most importantly he can see.

I was Deidre Barlow as a child so I never wore them lol. The choice now is amazing

Mummyshark2018 · 16/02/2019 09:19

My dc gets 4 new free pairs a year and has never had a problem choosing from specsavers- in fact we struggle to whittle it down. The range they have on display is not everything. From what I've experienced everything on display comes in a multitude of colours

Would highly recommend the Zoobug range. Since we got these for my son, two different hospital ophthalmologists have asked about them and commented on how well fitted they are. You can get from independent opticians.

@Tiredofit arghhhh i had the brown ones too. I still remember the dread of having to wear them. Then i upgraded to a pair of winged beauties earning me the nickname dame edna.
Kids specs are really good now.
