DS is 11 in July. Im in the process of moving to the uk and he should be going into year 6, nd then to secondary in septemeber. would he be very out of place to go into year 5 now, and then have a whole year 6 before going to secondary? would he be very old in the class. thx.

The most pushy, ambitious mother I ever met had her son put in a class 2 years below his age so that he would be the best at everything.
He had a massive advantage with sports esp rowing and rugby because she also lied about his age to the sports clubs and he was the biggest strongest lad in his "year" winning everything until he got outed as a "Ringer".

Has he already done Y5 elsewhere in the UK? If so he might rightly feel academically set back and demotivated, with his old friends continuing on in Y6 and then secondary which him 'stuck back' at primary. I wouldn't do it for this reason alone.

Some private schools will entertain this _ I have several friends in London who have their child in the year above or below where they “should” be. Works well for them but they all know that they will stay private throughout whole school career so no problems down the line

It's not impossible. I went to a school where several children from military families moved here from USA and were taken into the academic year below their age group, because their level of education wasn't the same. Something to do with the age cut off being january-january in USA but September-September here.

Should add my school was a normal secondary school in england, not private school.
