AIBU to ask for reassurance from any medical people?

To clarify this is not in place of proper medical attention - we have a GP appointment this afternoon. Was just looking for a little reassurance while we wait.

DS (14mths) gave a urine sample on Tuesday morning. I received a text message this morning to ask me to contact the surgery. When I rang the receptionist said we needed to make an appointment to discuss the results and that would be “preferably today” I asked for further information but they couldn’t give me any.
I am going out of my mind with worry and have imagined every worst case scenario. I can’t stop crying and my heart is pounding.
I know this is an OTT reaction and was signed off work last week for extreme anxiety and depression which will explain my reaction.
Does anyone medical know what this could be about? Is it likely to be a urine infection or could it show up something serious like cancer?

Please be calm, I'd bet my house it's a urine infection.

Impicciona · 15/02/2019 10:22

It could be something as simple as ketones
or sugar showing in the urine and they want to check him over. I'm sure it'll be nothing serious OP.

exwhyzed · 15/02/2019 10:25

What led him to having a urine sample taken in the first place?

MaryShelley1818 · 15/02/2019 10:25

Thank you x

It will probably be a UTI, and they want to treat it asap. They're far quicker about treating little children of that age, and will jump on stuff they would be happy to leave a little longer for older kids and adults. It sounds like you have an on-the-ball GP, which is great. Very, very likely to be this, and not anything sinister.

Try not to worry.

You cannot test for cancer with a urine sample.
It will be either there was signs of infection or possibly a bit of sugar in his wee.

Oysterbabe · 15/02/2019 10:26

My bet is a urine infection and they want to prescribe antibiotics.
Disclaimer, not medical.

He’s peeing a lot, had a few high temperatures and was squirming about all night.
I rang on Monday and asked if it could be done and they told me to get a sample (the GP had seen him on Friday as he’d had fever of 39.4) but no other symptoms so she thought it was probably just a virus.

It could a urine infection and the urgency probably because urine infections are horrible for children, and unusual for boys.
My little boy was so poorly when he was11 weeks old rushed into hospital with suspected meningitis and after blood tests and lumbar puncture, results showed he had a urine infection.
He had to have a kidney scan because urine infections can damage the kidneys if left untreated.
They won’t leave a child so young with a UTI so probably is that.
Try not to worry, I had a scare yesterday when I found a lump on my 14 month olds neck, turns out he had a throat and ear infection which has caused his glands to swell.

Hope he’s better soon Flowers

Thank you everyone, it does help to have some rational and common sense replies.

Sorry it was urine sample that showed the infection not the BT or LP

MeredithGrey1 · 15/02/2019 10:30

The receptionist probably wasn’t allowed to say, and I don’t think that the fact they want to see you today is anything to be especially worried about - even a mild UTI can get worse and become serious so it’s better to see to it sooner rather than later.
Did the doctor seem worried on Tuesday when your son gave the urine sample? Are his symptoms particularly concerning?

MeredithGrey1 · 15/02/2019 10:31

Sorry, cross post asking about his symptoms

MaryShelley1818 · 15/02/2019 10:33

I collected the sample and didn’t see the GP on Tuesday but no, she didn’t seem worried when she saw him last Friday.
His temperature has settled since we gave the sample but he has been clingy and tearful for a few days now.

I'd imagine a UTI and they want the appointment today so he can get antibiotics in a timely fashion!

MaryShelley1818 · 15/02/2019 15:40

Thank you for all the reassurance and advice.
I can confirm there’s nothing wrong with DS - there was a trace of bacteria which they believe is down to contamination but no other signs of any kind of infection at all. The lovely GP made the appointment so she could reassure me and give him a thorough check over (ears, nose, throat, tummy, chest, temp etc) ironically to stop me worrying and ease my anxiety. I didn’t have the heart to tell her what I’ve been through this morning.
