I was cooking dinner in the kitchen when I noticed a car parked across the street. The headlights were on so I thought someone just stopped to answer their phone or text back. But then every time I went to the sink I could see the car was still there. About 20 minutes later there was a knock on the window. I was still busy with food, so just shouted to DH to go get the door. He opened it to a youngish bloke (in his twenties he thought) wearing black tracksuit with his hood up. When the guy saw him, he started stuttering and said he was looking for 'Danielle and Shenaya' or something like that and his knees started shaking. At this point DH noticed, that there were 3 other blokes ready to get out of the car but when they saw him they closed the doors and stayed in. The guy at the door apparently couldn't get away quick enough. I made a joke that I hoped they didn't plan to rob the house, because the only thing worth stealing here is me but DH didn't laugh. He said that clearly they've been watching me since our kitchen doesn't quite look like wealthy people live here. I don't get easily scared but this threw me off balance. DH wasn't even supposed to be home - he finished work early - so it would be just me and DS at home if he didn't. I do have a big bulldog but even with him I probably couldn't do much against 4 grown men...
It could've been genuine ofc but it's a close knit community we live in and I know that nobody by those names and description lives in the area. And why did it take them whole half an hour to knock on the door and ask? I really hope I'm just overreacting but that's really creepy.

Horrid! Confused Flowers and Wine full you

Lemontwist · 14/02/2019 20:27

I'd be really spooked too. I don't suppose you got the reg number? I'd call 101 and definitely tighten up on security if you can.

spugzbunny · 14/02/2019 20:27

I agree that this is very odd. I would report to the none urgent crime number. Can you also post on a local Facebook page? People do that round here when they are people casing houses and often it's linked to break ins. I'd say they thought only you were in and they were going to rob you.

Wakk · 14/02/2019 20:30

I wouldn't like that. Are you sure there were three others in the car? How did he know they were about to get out then didn't?

Avigeth · 14/02/2019 20:30

@Lemontwist
It was really dark, I couldn't even tell the make or the colour, let alone the reg number. It might be a good time to have a look through the attic and find the machete :D

People on here scoff sometimes at people not answering to door but these things do happen. I lived in a not very nice neighborhood and never answered the door because I was never expecting anyone.

Babooshkar · 14/02/2019 20:31
Sad Very spooky! Did your husband get the reg number / car description?
TarragonSauce · 14/02/2019 20:31

I'd be into Argos first thing and set up one of those Ring doorbells.

Avigeth · 14/02/2019 20:32

@Wakk
They've shut the car doors when they saw him, he probably wouldn't even notice if not for that.

BrilliantDarling · 14/02/2019 20:33

That does sound very dodgy! There has been a teenage girl knocking on doors in my area while another girl and 2 teenage boys are waiting in a car outside, a few people have opened the door to her and then the 4 of them have ran in the house to rob whatever they can!

HeathRobinson · 14/02/2019 20:33

I wonder if it's the first night they've watched you?

Avigeth · 14/02/2019 20:39

@HeathRobinson
I don't know but they were definitely not from around here. Also they parked in a dodgy spot where they could easily get hit by cars turning from the main road, especially in the dark.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 14/02/2019 20:41

Op that is not nice.
I'd be tempted to log potential suspicious activity...(god, I have been on mumsnet for far too long)
It would throw me right off! Glad your DH was home

LLOE7 · 14/02/2019 20:41

That's so scary! I kind of hope they were planning on just robbing you rather than having darker intent. I doubt they will be back now they know your dh is there too OP. Thanks

Lymphy · 14/02/2019 20:48

That’s horrible, I’d really report it to non urgent as well, even if you didn’t get the make or model of vehicle they might try with other homes if they are a picture can be built from the smallest snippets of info, I’d be really shaken after that, I hope you’re ok

ATBhinchers · 14/02/2019 20:52

What kind Of car do you have? Sounds like they were going to rush you and get your car keys maybe? Or yeah just rob you. Time to up your security.

hidinginthenightgarden · 14/02/2019 20:55

I would definitley report this. It sounds like they were oportunists to me.

HollowTalk · 14/02/2019 20:55

I'd get some sort of CCTV camera set up pretty quickly.

Fuckertyfickfack · 14/02/2019 20:58

I'd report this just so the police had a log but I do live in a bit of a rough area. We live in a block of flats and I never answer my buzzer unless I'm expecting someone. We get a lot of scammers very often trying to get in. They dress up as just eat drivers or gas men etc and insist I let them in... Why are you not buzzing the flat you're supposed to be going to then? Often results in robbery/assault of some sort.

BessieBumptiousness · 14/02/2019 20:59

I'd also get a very large 'Beware of the Dog' sign in a prominent position... especially if you have a barker. They're usually a damned good deterrent. Mine's as soft as Labrador putty but I wouldn't like to test her out - she's very possessive of me so wouldn't go easy on anyone.

neveradullmoment99 · 14/02/2019 21:02

Report this. I know of two people who were basically held at knife point when some thieves claiming to be the gas board came round.They were held like this while the house was ransacked. It also happened in broad daylight in the morning.

Avigeth · 14/02/2019 21:04

I'll try to get DH to call 101 but I'm not getting my hopes high. The last time I tried to call them when some little idiot tried to sell me weed in front of a chip shop when I was with DS on the way from the school run but nobody answered ;/

OP posts:
Pk37 · 14/02/2019 21:05

Definitely call 101 , they could be on the look out for another poor soul

Schmoozer · 14/02/2019 21:12

I wonder if they were hoping to take your dog ??
Large bulldog / dodgy blokes .....

33goingon64 · 14/02/2019 21:13

Around here it's getting quite common for criminals to stake put properties, watch who comes and goes, knock and have some bullshit story about selling something or looking for someone who he they're checking out locks, what's stealable etc. Get an alarm and use it. Don't answer the door to anyone you don't know. Shame, but people are desperate unfortunately.
