Mixed in, sprinkled on top and then in the oven or both?

I usually just mix it in, but if someone else was cooking and also did it on top, I would be very glad to eat that. I wouldn't only do it on top, though. That would be weird.

Cheese in mash, and then back in the oven? Potentially with more cheese on top? Never heard of this! Sounds good, but I can feel the stomach pains coming on just thinking about it. Damn you cheese! :(
