To be freaking out about glandular fever?

I've found out this morning that I 'probably' have glandular fever. When I asked if I needed blood tests to confirm it, he said 'nah'.
There's been all sorts thrown at me, that it could last for months, that I need bloods to check my liver, that my spleen will be swollen so don't take any knocks, that I need to be signed off work etc etc.
I'm freaking out, I'm on my own and I'm really scared! Sad

I had glandular fever the Summer after 2nd year at uni. I was very ill for probably 2-3 weeks and then very weak for several months meaning I missed my Summer job that year as I couldn't stand or walk for long and needed frequent naps - but like being a toddler again. As PP have said I'm sure I've still got lasting effects from it 20 years on, certainly my energy levels deplete very quickly and any infection causes my glands to swell. Not nice at all and you have my sympathy OP.

Thanks everyone. I'm really freaking out about it. I have blood tests tomorrow. The doctor at A&E this morning said there was a '1%' chance of things getting worse/deteriorating, and I now have lumps on the side of my neck, the pain has got worse and the roof of my mouth is sore too, with shooting pains through my tummy and sides (not sure if that's related). I feel horrific.

Lots and lots of fluid and rest. That’s about it at moment. Get well soon.

I had it when I was a teenager. I had a huge lump on the side of my neck, slept for a week and it took me a few months to be 100% back to normal. No lasting effects from it though. Hope you feel better soon!

I had it when I was in uni. Felt a bit tired and unwell for about a fortnight. Then I was back to normal.

I had it at 16. Very, very ill to start with horribly painful, swollen tonsils and huge pus sacs on them which had to be lanced as I couldn’t swallow (not even my saliva). Swollen spleen and such fatigue. Moving got so painful I couldn’t get up for the loo. I was out of school for three months. One month very ill, the last two was fatigue.

Like PP, I would get ill easily for a number of years afterward, always my throat, frequent tonsillitis and laryngitis.

I did have a blood test confirmation

Whereas, a friend of mine had it shortly before me. fatigue and sore tonsils were her symptoms. Confirmed by blood test. In total illness (about a week) and recovery (fatigue) for her was a month. People react/recover differently.

Jeep calm. Get yourself sorted in case it does progress and adopt a wait and see approach. Hope you get better quickly

Ask the pharmacist for sprays for sore throat. They’re behind the counter. Fabulous numbing sprays out there. Does give some short term relief. Gargling with warm salt water helps too.

Don’t be scared but you must rest, when you start to feel better then just slowly start to increase your activity and if it makes you worse for more than a few hours then you need to scale back. By rest through this hopefully you will avoid PVFS

My husband had glandular fever a few years ago. His doctor thought it was strep throat at first so gave him antibiotics but when that didn't help they did a blood test and got the diagnosis. He felt properly ill for a couple of weeks and his throat was incredibly sore. He also tired easily. However he got better quite quickly and hasn't had any longer term effects. I'm not sure if he lost weight but the stress and worry of seeing him ill (and not knowing what was wrong for a while) meant that I did! I hope you feel better soon.

Not a big freak at all. Very common illness . Really varied side effects so I’d continue as normal.

Fazackerley · 15/02/2019 07:14

I've never seen anyone as ill as dd was with Gf. Hanging over the side of her bed letting saliva and gunk drip into a bowl and eventually being unable to breathe properly as her throat was so swollen. Exacerbated by the gp giving antibiotics that react badly with gf.

I honestly respect anyone who's had this. I've spent my whole morning so far in tears I'm in so much pain!

I had it when I was15. Was doing work experience at my Dads office. Felt crap, went to tell him and fainted mid sentence. Rushed to Drs who did blood tests, given tons of tablets, sent home and slept for about 2 weeks solid. My mum has to change the bedding so many times as I was just sweating!!

Off school for a month, then half days but I was physically wiped out for several years and I remember being very disappointed I lost my place on the hockey team
