Please tell me I'm not overreacting!
I started a job after being off work for over six months due to stress etc so maybe I'm being a little sensitive.
It's a foodie type shop and I'm lone working.
So on first day the owner shows me the cctv and instructions on how to just leave on , not touch cameras etc..
Didn't really think much of it and it comes in use when shop is busy and I can see what's happening around shop .
Anyway a month in and I get a call from owners wife asking how I am .. never had any contact with her before.. so made polite chit chat and she mentioned she was calling because one of her children saw me trip up the step 20m before Blush
I said I was fine but she said it made the children giggle but she was hoping I wasn't hurt .. but it's thrown me ... are they watching my every move during the day and did they see me singing along to the radio .. OMG just thought it wouldn't have sound would it?
Anyhow I now feel I'm acting strange.. well more than normally! I over exaggerated my movements when cashing up etc.
It is a bit weird isn't it , or the norm for today's gadgetry world?

Employers are allowed to use CCTV for justifiable reasons (eg security) however they can’t use CCTV to excessively monitor employees and spy on them. Especially if it records audio too. It’s a bit off if they’re watching your every move and commenting, even worse if you’re being provided as entertainment for her children.

However as you seem to work for a small employer so short of taking this to a tribunal, you’re better off trying to look for a new job with a better manager.

It isn't normal.

I've lone worked with luxury goods - my employer didn't monitor me, cctv ran but it was for security not to watch me.

Odd that your employers and children are watching you do your job, do they not trust you?.

ImNotKitten · 14/02/2019 11:03

I don’t think you’re being over sensitive. That’s intrusive and feels like spying. One thing to have the CCTV, another to be using it to monitor you live. I’d look for another job.

They may have just been reviewing the tapes; its not a productive use of time to employs someone to do a job, then watch them do that job remotely - might as well cut out the middle man and operate the shop themselves.

Thank you for replying.. I'd only tripped a little while before so think it was huge coincidence that they happened to see that or are watching all the time.
I'm feeling a bit spooked by it but am definitely looking for another job.
I understand that security or if something was incorrect in cashing up etc to review but it feels intrusive.
I'm completely on own for day to day cash/banking/stock control etc and they know from my previous employment and references that this is not only a piece of cake for me but I'm totally trustworthy.
