To go for a hike with a 4 month old

I really want to take my dd (4 months) out hiking, in an infant carrier (on my own while dh is at work) . My plan would be to take a blanket, with something waterproof, so that I can take her out of the carrier and put her on the ground when it is time for a feed, rather than restricting myself to a short walk with cafe at the end.

Has anyone done something similar? I'm not sure if it is a recipe for disaster, and we'll end up an hour away from the car in a meltdown! I haven't been using the carrier that much, so I guess I'd be better working up to it and getting her more used to the carrier. I should also add I'm in the w of Scotland, so would need to make sure I go on a decent weather day! Any advice welcome, I so miss the countryside!

Would add that make sure you check on them every 30 mins and have your wee one wear a hat. Was up a hill at the weekend and a chap was walking up with a baby in a backpack. Baby looked nice and cosy but it's hood had blown back so it's poor wee head was exposed and it was a chilly wind. Even better would be the sort of backpack carrier that has a cover so the baby is protected from the elements.

I did it with both my children and took my granddaughter away for a week's walking last year too. I'd forgotten how heavy they get (or perhaps I've got older......)

When I bought the backpack for the granddaughter, I forgot how helpful it us to have one that will stand independently. Makes it much easier to get on!
