I’m 14 weeks pregnant with DC 2 after having an ELCS with DS1 - so it is quite early to be thinking about this already, but I’ve heard quite a few horrendous VBAC stories and wondered if anyone out there has a positive experience to share? Thanks in advance Smile

Sucessful VBAC here too. Would not hesitate to do it again (well, don’t want another one, but theoretically).

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 14/02/2019 21:54

My best friend did it. Her vbac was much quicker and easier than either of my vaginal births! Quick, just needed gas and air, and no complications

Exhaustedmummy1811 · 14/02/2019 22:43

@firsttimer16 I had an elc with my second due to breech presentation. I then had 2 vbacs the first was induced at 42 weeks as she didn't want to come out. They tried popping my waters first (not at all favourable cervix was still back and long, but they did manage it) they gave me 3 hours to go in to natural labour which didn't happen so I ended up on the drip. I had a lovely labour and only had gas and air. I really wa Ted another VBAC this time but I'm booked for a section due to low fluid and breech baby. Good luck

First baby CS for big baby at 42w (unnecessary)
second child VBAC 1 quick 1 hour easy delivery
Third delivery CS in labour with twins (again unnecessary)
Fourth labour VBAC 2 fairly quick 3 hour labour 9lb 9oz baby

It largely depends on likelihood of the reason for the original section reoccurring

Hi, I had an ELCS first time as baby was breech. Second time, 11 days over was enduced. No drama, all went fine. Think positive, no reason to worry :)

MsTSwift · 14/02/2019 22:56

First induction after waters broke 13 hour labour then emergency c section. Second popped out naturally 5 hours start to finish. Such different labours!

DippyAvocado · 14/02/2019 22:59

I had one. My EMCS had followed the late discovery of an unusual presentation rather than difficulties with the labour. I think VBACs are sometimes less successful if your first EMCS was due to failure to progress.

The VBAC was not my favourite experience but not dissimilar to other first time deliveries I suppose. I had a lot of trouble in the pushing stage and almost ended up with ventouse. I did tear badly - 3rd degree - and I needed to be stitched up in theatre. However, I found the recovery much faster than with the C-section, although I would have said I had a quick recovery from that too. I was up and about quicker which was useful having a newborn and a toddler!

I went a few days over and they were murmuring about induction but I had categorically refused that from the first meeting I had with them as I'd read about increased risks of rupture.

I had to have continuous monitoring but it didn't really bother me. To my surprise they didn't want me in early during the labour. I was 6cm when admitted and could still move about/get into different positions etc with the belt on.

I was pleased I'd done it. Part of me felt like I'd missed out on something by having the C-section, although having the VBAC actually made me realise how silly that was as the end result both times was luckily a healthy baby - made me see that it didn't matter how they got there, I loved them both the same.

EMCS for DC1 (waters broke, induction, epidural, cycle of intervention) and VBAC for DC2. Very glad I made the decision - DH was against it as convinced I'd end up with another EMCS and I was out to prove him wrong. Wasn't the best experience ever in my life and had to have ventouse in the end, but still much better than an ELCS would have been - no issues with driving or picking up toddler, and (possibly a coincidence), I felt love for DC2 immediately but took weeks for DC1. Also gave DH a newfound respect for me! I'd say go for it unless any high risk factors (eg not advisable if need to be induced).

I had one, and it was healing and empowering (I felt like bloody superwoman 😂) and absolutely the best choice I could have made. My trauma symptoms from my first EMCS birth have gone. I can now think back to DD1’s newborn days and remember it without awful flashbacks or intrusive thoughts that last for days.

I have a high BMI but I had a VBAC on the MLU with intermittent auscultation. Hospital was supportive throughout. We did hypnobirthing, DH was amazing, and I did the whole lot on gas and air.

First labour was 80+ hours ending in EMCS. Second was 5hrs from first niggle to delivery, pushing stage was 30 mins. No complications, up and and about and in the shower a couple of hours afterwards. Lovely golden hour with DD2 immediately after, full delayed cord clamping, fed her immediately. V minor tear, only needed a couple of stitches.

It was painful, I won’t lie. But I would do it again in a heartbeat and the recovery was an absolute breeze compared to a section. I was making a full roast for the family 48 hours after the birth.

tor8181 · 14/02/2019 23:19

not myself as i had 2 horrendous births,14 days over, 4 day labour with no 1,and no 2 was 7 days over 2 sweeps that didnt work,3rd one did and when he did came out after 14 hours with help(that sucky thing to the head)all my insides came out with him

but my friend had a 5 pound baby today with in 45 mins

she was 5 days over and in hospital already and from first contraction to fully out she said was 40-50 mins with 3 pushes

sparkysdream · 14/02/2019 23:27

I’ve had two, and both were completely straight forward. I researched a lot and couldn’t find any evidence that continuous monitoring was beneficial, rather that it was likely to sow things down and make a medicalised birth more likely.

First one I was told I couldn’t have midwife led unit, but I refused cannula and just had intermittent monitoring, I kept on my feet for all but delivery when i kneeled on the bed, was just in hospital 3 hours before baby arrived.

When I met with the consultant midwife before next one she was horrified I had been refused the midwife unit and practically suggested a home birth for second vbac. I didn’t in the end as I had a lot of fluid and baby didn’t engage, but still totally straight forward birth in midwife led unit. I only made it to the delivery suite with 10 mins to spare!

I had a successful VBAC 5 years ago. DS had been born by emergency c-section ( fetal distress) 5 years before. 2nd time all went well and labour progressed really fast ( about 90 minutes between getting to hospital at 2 cm dil. and having DD in my arms), which meant there had been no time for an epidural. I had only gas and air, it was sore indeed but hey, if I were to have another kid, I'd go for VBAC again.

PrincessConsuelaBanana · 15/02/2019 20:50

Thank you so much for all these stories ladies! Youve been so helpful and informative and you’re all bloody amazing 💪🏻
My first CS was because my son was breech and on the big side (they guessed abpit 10lb but actually he was ‘only’ 8.10). I was upset I had to have a CS - they called it ‘elective’ but it wasn’t really my choice! - but ended up having an amazing experience and fast recovery (for a CS anyway).
The thing that puts me off ELCS this time is the recovery time as DS1 will only be 2 and a half when DC 2 is born, and also part of me feels like I would like to have the experience of labour and Vbirth! I feel a lot happier about trying to deliver by VBAC now knowing it does work or well for lots of women so I’ll go away and do some more research and see how things progress in this pregnancy Smile
Thanks again and best of luck to you other pregnant ladies FlowersCake

I also had a VBAC after having an emergency section with my first. I was told as first emcs was due to baby distress there was no reason not to try.
Induction. With epidural it wasn't horrendous, episiotomy included.
Was out the next day, compared to five days after emcs. Given the chance to do it all over again, I would choose naturally every time.
BF them both. Two years apart.
