To ask which book characters irrationally annoy you?

I'm currently reading the play "The Rise and Fall of Arturo UI" by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht (though it takes place in Chicago). There is a fairly minor character (at least at the point in the play where I'm at) called Young Dogsborough, whose father is a major character in his 80's. Any time the son says anything, it is to unnecessarily agree with the father. For example if the father says, "They've gone", the son will then say "My father says they've gone."
Which book characters have you felt annoyed by?

EVERY CHARACTER IN JANE EYRE

Also Celie’s sister in the colour purple... finds her sister has moved out; emigrates to Africa because she doesn’t know where she’s gone wtf.

SweatyUnderboob · 16/04/2019 15:22

Liz in Eat, Pray, Love

@amibeingnaive

  • you are fecking hilarious, thank you from the heart of my bottom for the below - xx

Willy Wonka is also a shady bastard. Creepy, disingenuous loner fixated on kids. Hmmm.
Spot the dog also irks me. I find him smug. Babar's another, but that royal privilege, I suppose.

Ravenclawclassof84 · 16/04/2019 18:02

Agree about Carrie Bradshaw. Selfish, weak, whiny, always seems to morph into whoever she's dating, no personality of her own to speak of. Gah. Love the others tho!

Tinkerbell456 · 16/04/2019 18:16

Going out on a limb here but the Duke of Norfolk I couldn’t stand in the second Boleyn girl.Nor his brother in law Thomas Boleyn.Cold, ruthless, even malicious characters. I can forgive the irritating Miss Bates in Emma, who was very annoying but kind.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/04/2019 18:18

Lily Dale. Smug, selfish, arrogant, obstinate - just marry poor Johnny ffs

Dead right!

Going on like she's totally faithful to true love and all that shite, and is a woman who is determined not to Give Herself To Any Man because one twat (who she actually knew for about two months) shat on her dreams from a great height.

It's not fidelity, you stupid woman! It's letting Adolphus Crosbie TOTALLY OWN YOU FOR LIFE!!!!!

FFS -marry Johnny and let that prick Adolphus see that he's not irreplaceable.

Idiot!

I find the lead character in Joanne Harris's chocolate quite annoying. Is it Vivienne?

Vianne.

She complicates life for herself, doesn't she?

peachsquish · 16/04/2019 18:52

My dd hates perfect Peter from horrid Henry she said that he is a cry baby and a snitch.

vincettenoir · 16/04/2019 18:57

Emma from One Day. She was really self righteous and bland and made a lot of mistakes while judging others. Mind you Dexter wasn’t any better. Those 2 deserved each other.

woodhill · 16/04/2019 19:10

Yes Vianne is odd and annoying as is her dd.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/04/2019 18:39

Eustacia Vye. And Emma bloody Bovary. Both annoyed me more than words can say. Pull yourself together, love.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/04/2019 19:07

Who is Eustachia Aye?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/04/2019 19:07

*VYE

ffs autocorrect!

KittyInTheCradle · 17/04/2019 19:11

Sylvia Plath in The Bell Jar... I know that's a weird one but she was so mean to her friend!!!

woodhill · 17/04/2019 19:26

In Return of the Native - Hardy

Similarly Grace in the Woodlanders and most of the characters are very annoying

CountArthursgroupie · 17/04/2019 22:14

Emma, the nasty cow. And I agree with pps about Wuthering Heights, horrible book, especially for dog lovers!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 18/04/2019 04:11

Eustacia Vye is one of the star turns in Hardy's Return of the Native. Utterly self indulgent and self absorbed, never satisfied, toys with men, leaves a trail of disaster, blah blah blah. Thankfully she falls or chucks herself to a watery end.

Bibijayne · 18/04/2019 04:25

Everyone in Withering Heights. Especially Heathcliff.

Tavannach · 18/04/2019 04:50

Mrs. Bennet.
I love Pride and Prejudice and get why she's meant to be irritating, but I think she's heavily overdrawn.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 18/04/2019 08:22

Tom Tulliver in The Mill on The Floss self righteous prick

Yes also to Angel Clare I actually shouted "oh you complete shit" when I read it and startled the man in the next tent

Giggorata · 18/04/2019 19:20

Tom Bombadil in whichever Tolkien it was - speaking in rhyme AND referring to himself in the third person..
I agree with so many others.. especially the Famous Five and St John Rivers..
Oh and Jubal in Stranger in a Strange Land.. endlessly giving everyone the benefit of his wisdom..

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/04/2019 12:15

Was that the Silmarrilion (or similar!) Giggorata?

If so, the entire book was shite.

I couldn't get past the first chapter and that was an effort.
