AIBU to ask about Valentine’s Day?

DS (16) wants to get small and last minute valentines gift for a girl he has only just started seeing. So quick pole for people that have DDs of a similar age.

What would they like for Valentine’s Day. Would they still think sweets, chocs or flowers are cute/nice or a bit naff?

He obviously doesn’t want to spend much and it needs to be something he can buy quickly after school tomorrow.

Remember this isn’t about what you would like but a teenager (my first instinct was that flowers were a bit ordinary but maybe when I was 16 I would have been quite chuffed).

I would have thought that 16yr olds wouldn't be interested in flowers.

What does the girl like? Generally.

Bayleaf25 · 12/02/2019 18:40

She apparently likes Dance, Music, Clothes etc. so not an awful lot to go on as kids tend to stream their music these days and it’s a bit soon for her to be buying her clothes Smile

I have girls of a similar age who have all been THRILLED with a small bouquet of flowers.

fashiondevotee · 12/02/2019 18:42

I would've liked flowers at 16. I'm also willing to bet she'd love bragging posting about them on Instagram. Wink

I've seen a lot of single roses in supermarkets (Sainsburys do them with glitter on the petals) that are quite cute. Maybe one of those and some chocolate?

AppleKatie · 12/02/2019 18:43

Flowers are a huge novelty at 16 go with flowers the classics are the best.

funnylittlefloozie · 12/02/2019 18:43

Just asked the 16 year old girl sitting on my sofa... apparently a bunch of flowers and a Kinder Bueno would be the right answer.

Emelene · 12/02/2019 18:45

Yes I think flowers are lovely! And some chocolates too. Smile

lettymoo · 12/02/2019 18:46

I'd have been delighted with a card, and any of: flowers, chocolates, a teddy, cheap(ish) jewellery. At that age the idea of receiving a valentines gift from an actual boyfriend was all very exciting!

Dimsumlosesum · 12/02/2019 18:46

Flowers. A simple necklace maybe, though that might be a bit much.

babycatcher411 · 12/02/2019 18:47

I think a small ‘cutesy’ bunch of flowers would be perfect.
Not a big bouquet you’d need a big vase for but a small brunch almost like a bride/bridesmaid might hold.

Maybe like this?

Another vote for flowers and chocolates.... I think I got a teddy bear from my first proper boyfriend.... when he broke up with me I cut it up into to tiny pieces.... feel quite mean now... was a cute teddy

Aria2015 · 12/02/2019 18:49

Single red rose would have made my Valentine's Day at 16 (and now!).

MeredithGrey1 · 12/02/2019 18:51

Is he giving her the gift at school? I think it depends on the girl, I’d have been quite shy/self-conscious to carry around a bouquet of flowers to every lesson (but I’m definitely willing to accept I may be in the minority).

mimibunz · 12/02/2019 18:51

A little posey of flowers and a good chocolate bar.

Whisky2014 · 12/02/2019 18:52

Deffo flowers. I thought that's the dream? They've seen all women get flowers in films...

Bayleaf25 · 12/02/2019 18:55

Ah thanks peeps, I was thinking keep it simple for a first valentines. I don’t know when he’ll give it to her (maybe try to secretly leave it on her doorstep before school???) I’m not sure about the embarrassment factor of giving a gift at school.

Absolutely a bunch of flowers and a card! Perfect to show off how chuffed she is (and make all her friends jealous!) on instagram

Sparkletastic · 12/02/2019 19:00

My DD says flowers would be 'fine' but a large amount of chocolate would be 'sick'

Sparkletastic · 12/02/2019 19:01

I think she means sick in a good way.

I still have the red rose my first proper boyfriend gave me for Valentines when I was 15 or 16. I pressed it and it is in a frame on my hall table, we have long since parted ways but it was a special thing for me at the time.

PinkGin24 · 12/02/2019 19:06

At 16 I would have been delighted with flowers, chocolates and a card!

checkingforballoons · 12/02/2019 19:08

Oh absolutely get him to leave a single rose on her doorstep!
