not to keep my supermarket receipts?

I've just taken a packet of 'fresh' pasta which i bought last week, back to the supermarket as it was mouldy. It still had 6 days to go on the use-by date and had been kept in the fridge since i bought it. the man asked me if i had the receipt and i replied no, as i bought it last week. he told me they would have preferred to see a receipt. in the end, they did exchange it for me and said they would speak to head office about it, but are they being unreasonable wanting to see a receipt and does anyone else keep their supermarket receipts, "just in case"?
just wondering really.....

No I don't keep supermarket receipts either. If the food was clearly branded as coming from that supermarket I think the chap concerned was a bit jobs worth

No i don't but dh does.
Doesn't seem very polite customer service.
Which s'market was it?
Asda fall over backwards to replace anything gone off

I would say whether that would depend on whether it was a 'named' brand or not. Wouldn't keep a supermarket receipt personally but I think they, by law, have a right to ask for it.

i don't keep them, either.

I thought damaged goods meant you didn't necessarily have to have the receipt?

it was just a local supermarket , not a 'biggie' and it was their own brand. i have to say, the man sent for a supervisor and she had no qualms about replacing it, but it just made me wonder. i hate complaining about things but i also hate the fact that shops get away with mistakes because people arent ( including myself!)assertive enough sometimes!
