To ask for a new dentist?

I'm nearly 40. And over the years I've been unfortunate enough to need plenty of dental work.

I've had root canals, extractions and fillings.

I've also moved house. a lot. so had lots of dentists.

I've never had a problem with anaesthetic, and never been afraid of the dentist. once the injection is done I can sit back and relax.

Until now! My most recent dentist moved away and I got a new one. first time she tried a filling and we had to abandon it as I could feel it all. we had to try again with a full nerve block.

This time, she said i had two fillings needed and that they wouldn't need numbing but she would numb me anyway
well I nearly jumped out of my chair. a full block later and I could still feel it. I suffered through one side politely and we have rescheduled the second.

she says I have 'thick bones' 😭 I never had this problem before. I'm supposed to go back to do finish the second filling in a couple of weeks but I'm too scared!!

I have not in my life had a fear of the dentist until now.

I feel.bad to ask for a different dentist, she is young and i don't want to knock her confidence but really I'm just terrified!!. I wish she had just said she can't manage me.and passed me.on :(

aibu to ask for someone else?

Go see someone else. Sometimes a dentist (or doctor or chiro etc) just doesn't work for you

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 10/02/2019 00:22

Of course YANBU and I hope you find a dentist you are compatible with soon.

hastingsmua1 · 10/02/2019 00:26

Could she refer you to a dental hospital?

jcyclops · 10/02/2019 01:58

I used to have the problem that I could feel the work being done, but my dentist worked out that the local anaesthetic works very slowly on me. Now I have the injection(s) and go back to the waiting room whilst he sees the next patient. When I am called back in I am fully numb. Maybe you have a similar problem and your dentist is unaware of it.

‘Thick bones’ 😂😂😂

A lower back tooth, yes?
Could happen with any dentist but if you don’t feel at ease , just go elsewhere

gruffalomom · 10/02/2019 13:34

Yes they have all been lower back teeth! The first time I didn't worry about it too much. She stopped and we tried a different anaesthetic another time and that was fine. But thè second time it was the same thing. most of my lower face was numb but not the teeth :( Its just made me anxious as it's never happened before .

Gruff, lower back teeth are sometimes buggers to numb.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/02/2019 20:13

I changed my dentist just because his personality didn't gel with mine at all!

bumblenbean · 10/02/2019 21:29

Argh it’s awful when you suddenly feel the drill going into the nerve Shock I know exactly what you mean about being really apprehensive once it’s happened and nervous about future fillings - since it happened to me i dread every appointment even though I should be used to it by now, having such shit teeth! 🙊

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with transferring to a different dentist if only for your own peace of mind. Dental work is unpleasant enough without feeling uncomfortable with the dentist doing it...
