To dread the car crumbs

DD's best friend's lovely mum has asked me to take her DD to an atter school activity once a week for just 6 weeks as I will be taking my DD there anyway, and she doesn't drive.

The girls will need to have a snack in the car as time will be tight and it is a physical activity.

It definitely won't be for more than 6 weeks and the school suggest car pooling as it is a fair distance.

AIBU to dread the crumbs in the car? There's something wrong with me isn't there? It'll be weird if I say bring a non -crumbly snack!

It's not that I'm a clean freak. More that I loathe cleaning.

I've got kids that play sport in all weather, can't get upset about mud/crumbs. Too much stress.

We have a local wash/vac place that charge a £10 so I try and go monthly - or use my handheld dyson to clean it myself!

spreadingchestnuttree · 11/02/2019 06:52

Surely a 10yo could either eat without dropping crumbs, or eat something quickly before or after getting in the car?

GypsyRoseTea · 11/02/2019 06:55

Lol at eating a snack on the pavement

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2019 06:57

Reminds me of Monica in Friends letting people eat cookies 'over the sink'. Grin

noenergy · 11/02/2019 07:02

I hate crumbs in the car. I try to give my kids less messy snacks like apple, banana or if not fruit he least messy crisps are hula hoops. I really can't stand crisp crumbs or biscuit crumbs in the car, no matter how careful a child is there will b crumbs from these.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2019 08:01

But what if a chunk of banana fell off or the apple core was shock, horror dropped onto the seat. Shock
At least crumbs are dry and non staining.

Habadabadoo · 11/02/2019 15:14

@noenergy least messy crisps are hula hoops 😂

NannyRed · 11/02/2019 15:52

Can you suggest suitable snacks that both children can have, tell the other mum, n o crisps or biscuits, but fruit, pepperami, frubes etc. Tell her why, I’m sure she will understand.

user1andonly · 11/02/2019 16:21

It wouldn't bother me but, if I didn't want mess in my car, I'd prefer crumbs to potentially wiping of sticky fingers (yogurt, banana etc) on the seats as at least crumbs are relatively easy to vacuum.

barkinatthemoon · 11/02/2019 16:33

Just give them a Tupperware each to hold their snack over....?
Or make them eat before they get in/out?
Or just chill the shit out, let them eat and deal with the crumbs at some point. It's not as if they're going to permanently damage the car, and easy enough to clean up.
You'd seriously hate me and my car 🤣... it's like a mobile health hazard even with a weekly hoover session. My youngest got hold of a babybel out of dd1s lunchbox and smooshed the entire thing into the window (wax and all) then shook a whole packet of crunched up wotsits all over the seats and floor, and spat a banana on top of it all just for good measure. Yeah it wasn't great, but washed the car seats, the windows and backseat, hoovered and sponged it all and you'd never know it happened. Really not worth stressing over.

Holidayshopping · 11/02/2019 16:36

I wouldn’t want eating in the car either.

Can’t they have something to eat walking to the car or once you’ve arrived?

Walnutwhipster · 11/02/2019 16:39

Another for no food in my car. I only allow water as a drink too. If we go to McDonald's we eat in or bring it home. I smoke yet have never had a cigarette in my car either.

BertrandRussell · 11/02/2019 20:10

The problem with my car is not human food-it’s horse food!

That's great if you have copious amounts of spare time. I barely have time to get a wash on some days never mind so a full valet of the car.

gingercat02 · 11/02/2019 20:41

My car has my (football and general 10yo boy) sand (live near the coast but sometimes drive) sweet papers and crumbs. It even had dried pasta from a burst bag for a few months while. It's a naice car but meh!

gingercat02 · 11/02/2019 20:42

Mud from football obvs!

Boom76 · 11/02/2019 20:44

I don’t care if people eat in my car. It can be cleaned. I need snacks for long journeys anyway. DH tried to impose this rule and I laughed.

caughtinanet · 11/02/2019 20:52

I don't care at all if anyone eats in my car, I do it all the time, a quick hoover soon takes care of it.

Maybe it's easy if you don't spend much time driving, personally I can't begin to imagine a life where no food or drink is consumed in the car.

hastingsmua1 · 11/02/2019 21:08

What are the ‘crumby’ foods that you were planning to give them?

Merename · 11/02/2019 21:21

Wow yes I am more relaxed. You’d probably find my car gross. We are not ‘car people’ so not especially houseproud about it, it’s just a container that takes us places.

TooManyPaws · 11/02/2019 21:27

The ex once described my car as "a handbag on wheels" as everything just gets chucked in it. I occasionally muck it out, a couple of times a year or so. There is also a light film of dog hair over all but at least it brushes easily off leather seats. My car is a workhorse, it does its job hauling around stuff and animals in the country and taking me to work along mainly rural roads; I don't need it to be showroom ready.

steppemum · 11/02/2019 21:31

never had a problem with kids eating in the car. Never had a major issue with crumbs either, apart form when we had chocolate croissants on the way to the ferry after and early start.
That was a mistake!

mud and kids putting their feet against the seat in front (when little and in car seats) now that gave me the rage!

relax, a sandwich and a banana is not going to be the end of the world.

and for those saying a banana when ds was 10, that wouldn't have touched the sides if he needed a snack, he would have needed somethign more substantial.

earlybyrd · 12/02/2019 06:56

If I was the other mum I would think you were very very petty and would be laughing at you, sorry.
