I'm an English teacher and applied to become an Assistant Examiner - great poncey title - by contacting the exam board I now mark for. You can contact whichever board you're interested in marking for direct and they'll send you an application form - can't remember if it's subject-specific or generic. You'll need to specify what level you want to mark and which papers you'd be interested in doing. If you wanted to mark SATs, I think you'd have to get in touch with QCA but our school doesn't do them so I'm not sure how they work.

What do you do at the mo?

lucyellensmum · 05/07/2007 17:19

slayrette, i am SAHM, ive just got my PhD in biochemistry, i did some marking while i was doing this but they dont send out their exams for marking.

lucyellensmum · 05/07/2007 17:20

do you have to be a qualified teacher?

duchesse · 05/07/2007 17:24

lucyellensmum - no, I don't think you do. At my moderation meeting (I mark A2), I was sitting next to a PhD student - not even finished his doctorate yet - so I think university graduates are what they require. I would definitely contact the exam boards and enquire!

Duchesse but also - you are being very efficient!

lucyellensmum · 05/07/2007 22:03

thanks slayer, at uni the phd students would mark assignments but not exam papers. I will definately look into this though. Totally crass question, does it pay well? well reasonable even

3,900 words down. Some need rework, but onwards!!!

I get paid £4 something a paper, so the pay's not bad at all! This year DH has said I can have it to spend on clothes I can average between 3 and 4 papers an hour but English is a bugger to mark in terms of how long it takes!

slayerette · 06/07/2007 18:06

duchesse, you're showing me up

lucyellensmum · 06/07/2007 21:20

that does sound quite good, im definately interested. Do you find it fits in around the little ones well? I probably would have a couple of hours in the day (if i can keep off MN!!) and a couple of hours in the evening.

slayerette · 07/07/2007 10:54

Well, it depends how little little ones are. I have ds whose 4 and am also at work part time so mark mornings (while dh sees to ds) before work and early evening (while dh sees to ds...) and patches during the day when I get a moment. Supportive dh very useful
TBH, after about four hours or so a day, your brain gets fried anyway and you have to stop, otherwise you give them all random As or Us...
