To think these parents should not have been pandered to?

So because a few parents are offended by a play about a historical figure, the whole thing gets cancelled. Seems unfair to the kids who have presumably been working and rehearsing hard.

Link isn't working. Can you summerise so I can Google please?

TheSelfishRegina · 09/02/2019 17:33

No they should not have been pandered to.

Im not happy about my child being roped into ridiculous religious rubbish like school nativities but I dont get to complain and get it banned, plus all her friends are in it and its a bit of fun for dd, why spoil it.

Santaclarita · 09/02/2019 17:34

That seems ridiculous and yet not surprising.

Is this the play about Charles Darwin that got cancelled because some Christian parents were offended?
Pretty ridiculous.

YouTheCat · 09/02/2019 17:35

Why do these people advertise their stupidity to the world?

Birdsgottafly · 09/02/2019 17:35

Some Parents, Staff and others made some points about the inaccuracies and mocking of the Christian faith.

They were upheld.

If it had been any other religion, they would have been upheld.

If it's done as a School production, the children will take what is shown as fact and that's the worse bit.

One Mother said she was concerned about the messages the play was giving about not being able to be a Christian and a Scientist. Which is a valid concern.

From the Head Teacher: However, in hindsight I think that was a hasty decision. We could have put more effort into looking at whether we could have adapted it to make sure it was inclusive of everybody."

So the real reason why it was cancelled was a lack effort on the Schools part and someone giving it the go-ahead, with a Bump and grind song in it, as well as the divisive religious content.

If a play included the message that you can't be, Jewish/Muslim/Hindu etc and be a Scientist, it would never have been approved to start with.

Myself and other parents feel the same about bible assemblies and nativities our children attend. The way we combat it is to answer our children's questions and talk about our views on religion.

If these parents are worried that one humourous play about a historical figure would be enough to shake their child's faith (that they didnt chose for themselves in the first place) then they cant be very secure in the truth in it.

Sounds like they are worried about their children seeing things from another perspective, a lot of religious parents take this stance.

My children were brought up Christian, went to church and went to church schools. I'd have no problems with this play because you can cover a lot under 'this is what some people believe'.

I don't believe that communism, the British Empire or capital punishment were/are right but my children still learnt about them. Why should religion be any different?

Sheogorath · 10/02/2019 09:11

"Some Parents, Staff and others made some points about the inaccuracies and mocking of the Christian faith."

The play was written by a Christian. Why would he write a play mocking the Christian faith?

The play has Bishop Samuel Wilberforce as a character, and he argues against evolution. Which actually happened.

Knittedfairies · 10/02/2019 09:20

Soapy Sam Wilberforce was quite a character.
The parents should not have any been able to get the production cancelled; a bit of critical thinking never hurt any child.

FixTheBone · 10/02/2019 09:23

If I worked at the school, I would be massively petty about the whole thing.

A letter to all parents next week.

Many thanks to Mr/Mrs x, y and z, fir pointing out that some people may disagree with the content or be upset with our planned play about Charles Darwin. In the interests of equity and preventing further similar episodes we will also no no longer perform plays or celebrations at Christmas, Easter, Eid, Hannukah or Yon Kippur on the of chance that some non-religious parents may take offence.

Kind Regards.

Sheogorath · 10/02/2019 15:01

There's a scene in the play where Wilberforce asks Huxley which of his grandparents is desfended from an ape, which is exactly what he did. What's so offensive about recounting a historical event?
