The Girls He Adored by Jonathan Nasaw (thriller)
Out by Natsuo Kirino (crime)
Meeting evil by Thomas Berger (chiller)
Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs. (Hilarious memoir)

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind (historical type fantasy about scent).

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 09/02/2019 00:39

Things We Never Said - Nick Alexander

Author Gillian McAllister - She has 3 books out all British set thrillers.

Perfume is brilliant. Second that.
Recently read The 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Highly recommended

My favourite books are:

A Little Life: Hanya Yanagihara
A Fine Balance: Rohinton Mistry
Shantaram: Gregory David Roberts
The Secret History / The Goldfinch: both Donna Tartt
The God of Small Things: Arundhati Roy
A Million Little Pieces: James Frey
Tokyo: Mo Hayder
Any of the earlier SJ Boltons (especially Awakenings)

hazell42 I'm ready struggling getting into 7 Deaths, I've tried a few times. Do I just have to persevere?!

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It's historical fiction about two sisters in France trying to survive the german occupation. It's heartbreaking - I finished it at 2am and had to retire to the bathroom so my sobbing didn't wake DH.

Some other 5 star reads have been Mythos by Stephen Fry, Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng and A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

hazell42 · 09/02/2019 08:23

It is a little weird at first. But then it turns a corner and is totally gripping. Stick with it.

Have a look at Terry Pratchett and Jasper Fford for comic fantasy

Mark Lawrence for dystopian fantasy

Would also recommend Neil Gaimon, Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch - more fantasy :)

Jean M Aual / Julian May / Katherine Kerr have written fantasy with a historical basis

I am enjoying Mark Hodders steampunk / fantasy as well

Anne Mccaffery and Elizabeth Moon for SciFy

If you like paranormal have a look at Kelly Armstrong Otherworld series or Kim Harrison Hollows books

Thank you everyone, looks like I'll have enough to keep me going.

Ive read a few Katie Fforde books, I enjoyed them.

I like the sort of books where the main character has a "secret", but not too keen on murder mystery ones.
