To wait this long for contraception (6 months)

Ive finally met someone after being single for a VERY long time. Ive just visited the doctors today after waiting a month for a nurses appointment and then a month to see the doctor for contraception (the nurse is not allowed to prescribe your first contraceptives but can if you need a repeat etc). I have migraine with aura so cant take the combined pill and the mini pill that I tried caused constant bleeding/depression etc.
So we decided the copper coil would be the best non hormone contraceptive. I now have to wait nearly six months for it to be fitted as there is a waiting list. I then asked if I could maybe try another mini pill in the meantime but I was told that they only had one brand available and I had tried it so that was it!
I know I can just not sleep with my partner so that's what i'll be doing but am I unreasonable to think that six months is too long to wait??
I also thought that there were many brands of mini pills to try as a different one might be better.(there is only one brand Cerelle available).

Look for your local contraception clinic.

Dmacka75 · 08/02/2019 18:38

Is there a reason you cant use Condoms?

dementedpixie · 08/02/2019 18:40

Yes there are at least a couple of other mini pills that do not contain desogestrel (the hormone in cerelle). Could you see a different GP to see if they could prescribe a different one

Waveysnail · 08/02/2019 18:41

Perhaps go private?

Oysterbabe · 08/02/2019 18:44

Why not condoms?

dementedpixie · 08/02/2019 18:44

Norgeston and noriday are 2 other mini pills that do not contain desogestrel. They have a 3 hour window to take them rather than the 12 hours you get with cerelle

Pregnancy is more expensive on the NHS I've never understood why they don't make contraceptives a priority

ImNotKitten · 08/02/2019 18:45

How new is the relationship? Are you sure it’s a good idea to ditch condoms now?

Yanbu about the waiting time. But it’s the same story all over the NHS now. I don’t know anyone who has received treatment promptly apart from those referred under the 2 week rule.

dementedpixie · 08/02/2019 18:45

I used a family planning clinic to get my mirena coil. Is that an option?

FiveRedBricks · 08/02/2019 18:49

Why are you going through your gp surgery? Go to a sexual health clinic.

DrQuinnMedicineWoman · 08/02/2019 18:50

My local GP surgery was a 4 month wait after a consultation appointment to have the coil fitted. I called up my local Nhs sexual health clinic and I was given an app 2 weeks later. Had the consultation, made sure I was in good health and fitted it there and then. I just googled copper coil and my local nhs trust which gave me the info. Maybe that's an option for you?

Wallsbangers · 08/02/2019 18:50

Condoms.
Contact your local family planning/sexual health service.
Condoms.

Jackshouse · 08/02/2019 19:00

If you are ditching condones then you both need a full STI check first too.

Klopptimist · 08/02/2019 19:01

IIRC, a copper IUD is around £70 at Marie Stopes and £60 at BPAS if you have one nearby.

Don’t know where the OP is, but if she is anywhere like here, we don’t have a sexual health clinic (unless you’re under 25).

OP - push for another brand of mini-pill.
