To ask how much you spend on gas, and how much you use it!

Hi, I think I’m being overcharged for my gas. Moved into a property with a prepayment meter in September. I feel like I’ve spent a fortune lately on gas. On one hand, I like not getting a bill, but on the other hand, it’s costing a fortune. So am hoping to compare with others to see if I seem to be paying too much.

So it’s a 3 bedroom house, central heating with combi boiler. Gas hob.

Heating is on for a total of 6 hours a day, 2 in the morning and 4 in the evening.

Hob is used for 5 minutes here and there but not every day. Maybe 4 times a week, so maybe half an hour in total rounded up.

I’ve just looked at how many times I’ve topped up and it works out that I’ve spent £20 per week on gas alone.

Please share what you use and what you spend so I know how normal it is to spend this much. Thanks in advance Smile

At the moment, I spend around £25 a week on a prepayment meter. 2 bed house, only heating and hot water. It's expensive but during the warmer months £25 lasts for ages. I think last summer I only topped up once in about 3 months!

So I find it balances out

Prepayment meters are more expensive. We used 112 m3 last month and it cost £57, including standing charge. I was pleasantly surprised tbh. We don't tend to have the heating on the morning because we're rushing around and not every evening because we have a wood burner, but if the heating's on it'll be on for about 6 hours of an evening.

I’m putting about £20 a week on the meter at the moment.

But yeah- it’ll all balance out once summer comes.

2 bedroom flat. Got water and heating only, combi boiler.

I put £40 on the 13th, then had to put another £10, then added another £10 this week which will hopefully get me through until the 13th again. So averages to about £15 a week.

Hard to say how much heating is on, depends if it’s a work day, or how cold it it. Generally on for half hour in the mornings. It’s been cold lately so I’ve probably had it on quite a bit in the evenings too.

In the summer months £10 lasts weeks.

Iownabigvase · 08/02/2019 17:26

About £20 a week I'm not at home for two days a week but it is on pretty much constantly when we're in plus we go through a fair amount of hot water.. cleaning and Dd is a water baby so lots of baths. (No shower)
Agree with pp. In the summer £10 can last a fortnight.

Sounds about right to me for winter. I live in a terribly insulated one bed flat and I think we (two adults and a baby) use about the same. We use gas for heating and hot water.

outpinked · 08/02/2019 17:54

I had a prepayment in my last rented house and would easily spend £20 a week on gas during winter. I would only spend £5 ish a week during summer but then would spend more on electric somehow...

I now own a home so don’t have prepayment and we pay £50 a month for gas, same for electric. Use about £4 a day for both gas&electric according to the smart meter thing. I’m on mat leave so using the heating a fair amount.

VanillaSauce · 08/02/2019 18:06

We spend about £35 per month on our prepayment meter. An hour of heating in the morning on the timer and for an hour or two in the evening depending on how cold it's been. We also cook on gas but it's somewhat negligible because in the middle of summer we top up about £5 per month. 2 bed mid terrace, not particularly well insulated.
