To be pissed off at the BBC

Fed cup with adverts for the kids 500 words competition on every BBC Radio channel already. Also for an organisation so (rightly) keen on diversity - the chirpy kids advertising it are from the South of England and the big selling point is the finals are at Windsor Castle.

OP posts:

They will be child actors/models who are largely with London based agencies. What is the BBC supposed to do about that?

Call any of the hundreds of drama agencies throughout the country. They do exist.

Isn’t the new travel reporter from the West Midlands, (And also gay if you want added diversity)?

Pinkginxx · 08/02/2019 16:50

Wales v Scotland rugby game. Half time 'let's talk about England'
World Cup was constantly talking about how 'we' are progressing
I get you OP Wink

RomanyQueen1 · 08/02/2019 16:50

YABU, London is the centre of the universe.
Children from other areas can't do anything, don't be daft.
Kids need a southern accent to get on these days Grin

SophiaLovesSummer · 08/02/2019 16:53

Oh FFS.

Yep, lets get pissed off at public service broadcaster, God forbid, encouraging kids to write but instead diss them for the accents behind that campaignHmm

That'll be the same public broadcaster that has moved vast swathes of it's ops to Salford when the reality (whether people like it or not) is that de facto London is where Westminster is based, where most commentators and celebs are based, where most national senior officials are based - this was literally the reason that This Morning moved from Liverpool to London. Yeah, fuck them

Moving to Salford has cost them dear, hence so many interviews etc down the line rather than in person and that's not for reasons they are in control of but borne of a move in order to spread geographically as much as poss. Fuckers eh? Pushing jobs up north, encouraging kids to write - frankly they're obviously a bunch of cunts Hmm

It's Blue Peter all over again. As a Scottish child everything happened in London. YANBU Grin

NerrSnerr · 08/02/2019 16:55

In 2017 the 500 words final was at the Hay festival in Wales. Not sure about other years though.

Absolutely.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 08/02/2019 16:57

Last time I checked we still had school children here in Windsor.

derxa · 08/02/2019 16:59

I heard my first advert for it today and I only remember Zoe Ball’s voice. That's their first mistake Grin

How many children with northern accents are going to be living in London? Not many!

It’s in London THIS YEAR. It’s also been held in Wales in previous years. It is mostly judged by London-based talent, and I’m pretty sure the children would rather travel and meet famous authors and royalty than it be in a far-flung, remote location and judged by the chair of the local rotary club. Not to mention, they pay travel and accommodation for the finalists. YABU.

Flippidyflap · 08/02/2019 17:37

It was a Tough Hampton Court Palace last year. We went and it was amazing! I’ve not heard the advert but I doubt I’d even notice any different accents. I have more to worry about in life than something so insignificant.

SherlockHolmes · 08/02/2019 17:39

It's hardly south east centric. Have you watched the news lately? We call it Northern News in this house.

And we don't live in the north or the south east.

FenellaMaxwell · 08/02/2019 17:40

Also, there are huge sections of the country that speak with a neutral/London/RP accent. Most places below the midline of England, and there’s a much more dense population South of that line than North of it.

London/RP not necessarily the same thing.

AnnaMagnani · 08/02/2019 18:02

If you really want to be ignored, try moving to East Anglia - not the Cambridge bit.

It's like they didn't get that bit of the map.

Pinkginxx · 08/02/2019 18:06

We've always called it the EBC Smile

Petalflowers · 08/02/2019 18:09

My sister was a judge for the competition a couple,of years back. She lives in Wales.
