To ask if you have any experience of male breast cancer

Help, I'm panicking
My DH has had a lump on his left breast area just beside the nipple for about 3 weeks.
It had a sore red rash and was painful to touch for a few days. The lump is still there, the rash has reduced and it's no longer painful to touch. His nipple looks normal.

He went to the GP today and they've referred him to the local cancer centre for tests.

I'm beside myself. Any experience? Does this sound normal?
He is generally healthy. Slightly overweight dad bod but not remarkably so

I don't but maybe try not to panic until they know what it is as it might be something else. they maybe need to rule it out.

tfifridayatlast · 08/02/2019 13:31

That's what I'm thinking.
It's probably nothing at all but it's hard not to let fears take over

My BiL had it, as did all the women in his family. He was in his 50s when diagnosed. He had a mastectomy and that was that, no further treatment (and no reconstruction). It's very rare in men and more likely your DH has a cyst or something. Try not to worry too much (easier said than done of course).

Thank you xx

I thought I read years ago that Tom Cruise had breast cancer, right at the start of his career. By that I mean that he clearly made a full recovery.

SneakyGremlins · 08/02/2019 21:00

I had a lump near my nipple that was quite sore for a few weeks - it ended up being a cyst.

Please try and not worry too much!

Thanks everyone xx

Hi had the same fright a couple of months ago with OH referred to breast clinic and after a couple of needle biopsies it was confirmed as Gynecomastia apparently pretty common (a lot more common than breast cancer in men) hopefully this is what is found in your OH

tfifridayatlast · 09/02/2019 16:28

@Pearl63 thanks... we hope so too.
Was there much waiting around?
I think it's the not knowing which is really hard.
I know the chances of this being anything sinister are really small, but you can't shut that nagging doubt up in your mind

Luckily it was only a couple of weeks from seeing his gp until he saw the consultant, they did the biopsies there and then, the consultant told him he was 99% sure it was this issue but obv couldn’t guarantee it so biopsies were necessary it took a couple of weeks to actually get the all clear letter but the experience we had the consultant will have a gut feeling themselves. Hoping it is all good for you both as well

Mayonayse · 09/02/2019 19:32

Yes, it’s more common than you think, but the survival rates are way better because there’s less tissue and any lumps are noticed faster. Plus, if you have to have a tumour, and 1 in 3 of us will, breast is quite a good place to have it as the focus has been on breast tumours way more than any other area.

Anyway in all likehood it’s nothing sinister and your GP is rightly following protocol.

Mayonayse · 09/02/2019 19:34

And they also generally present as completely painless and the size of an apple pip. The business with the rash would generally indicate a skin thing. Even inflammatory bc is not generally first noticed with a rash.

Brahumbug · 10/02/2019 00:05

Male breast cancer isn't all that rare, 5% of breast cancer cases are men!

tfifridayatlast · 10/02/2019 00:39

It's so fucking scary... just trying to stay positive. I just hope we don't have to wait too long for the hospital appointment

OP posts:

We got the letter from the hospital today and it said 'you have been triaged by the consultant. We will write to you and give you 6 weeks notice of you appointment'

Obviously DH hasn't seen the consultant. Does this mean they've looked at the GP referral and decided that he's not a priority!
