I'm trying to think how somebody first got the idea for these. 'Pair of old tights lying around, waste not want not, what can I do with them? Oh I know, I'll pack them with something or other and twist a few bits round, cram them into an old screw top jar and say they're pickled people! Everyone will love them.'
