Not sure whether AIBU or more WWYD..

Have NC as very outting.

I was following a big lorry, he hit a bridge (either loaded too high or something) some rubble came off and smashed/cracked my windscreen. I flashed but the guy wouldn't pull over. I got the number plate. My insurance company is saying I can't claim as I have no evidence (no dashcam).

The car is a company car and I'm being charged over £800.

Would it be worth me reporting to the police? Or is there a way I can track down the company from the number plate? I really don't feel i should have to pay.

I'm really upset that I'm being charged because of someone else didn't secure the load correctly or went under a bridge which was too low for the vehicle.

Did you get pictures of the rubble? It must have fallen on the ground after hitting your car?

I don't believe what your insurance companies say - are they basically saying if there is a hit and run and you get the registration, you can't claim unless you have evidence??

I would call them again and see if you get a different answer.

You should definitely go to the police and say the other driver failed to stop at the scene of an accident and was driving without due care and attention. It's then up to them to follow up with the registration, find who was driving and get them to provide insurance details. Was there a company name on the lorry? Maybe you could speak direct to the company with registration, time, date etc so they can identify their driver.

You mention in the OP that it's a company car. Does the company insurance policy not include windscreen damage?

@roses2 I work in insurance. That's correct because you could literally pin it on anyone. The only caveat would be if someone was convicted of the offence of leaving the scene of an accident which the insurance company would take into account (if the driver was insured). A hit and run, or being hit by an uninsured driver would be recorded as a fault claim.

Going to the police would be a good idea.

That happened to my dad...he was able to turn around and follow the truck back to the depot and have it out with him there. They paid up. I'd report it to the police if I were you .... he could have done it to a few people.

Report to the police ASAP. I’m surprised you didn’t do that right away. Police can access cctv of nearby shops or traffic cameras too to help case of leaving the scene if the accident, driving without due care/attention. But if you leave it too long, evidence could be erased
