@Halloumimuffin
Looking at data for professors gives a misleading picture for current recruitment by universities (not that I think that they are actively practising positive discrimination). In the vast majority of universities many professors have been in post for several decades and therefore these people are totally irrelevant as to current hiring. Even the newer professors usually have at least 15-20 years experience as lecturers so the people currently being appointed as professors are on the whole those who gained their first academic job at the turn of the century and it is not difficult to argue that hiring practices have changed in the last 20 years (but of course as the experience is needed for the higher ranks it takes time for the better practices to lead to a significant increase in diversity in such roles).
This is also why it is better to look at the representativeness of the intake of new staff rather than the whole of the staff as the latter will take several decades to become representative even if the former is currently representative if historically the job has had a gender imbalance and the company is somewhat decent to work for meaning people often remain in their jobs for several decades.

Why not ? Especially if lack of such an option is then fed into a "No one has ever objected" narrative as a way of trying to skew debate

You want to add something in, so why do you? You want to make a change surely you have a reason better than 'well why not'

No one discusses how many people object to it. No one actually cares. They do it because they have to. No one cares what it says or if you even fill it in.

@DGRossetti well I don't think people who discriminate based on ethnicity do it on how you identify, they discriminate based on what they perceive you to be?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/02/2019 17:48

I don't want to give that information as whether I'm straight, gay, trans or identifying as a llama doesn't make any difference to whether I can do the job. It's my business and no one else's.

@Coldilox yes, it is “fact”. Maybe not where you
work but it is very real. West Mids Fire have been in the news about just this thing in the last few weeks.
