Apologies, I know I’m probably bu for posting here, but I know I’ll get replies from you helpful lot Smile

I’m looking at booking a few days away. Having a really tough time at the moment. Last year I spent some time in Dorset and I absolutely loved it. I’d live there if I could. I live in London, just so you can see the difference.

I think about being there and how happy I’d be. The peace and quiet, beautiful countryside, proximity to beaches, by also things to do with the kids. We stayed in a lovely cottage with massive garden and small holding. It was wonderful and relatively cheap.

I would go again, but I’m sure there are other places I’d love just as much so I’d like to explore. Does anyone have suggestions? So far I have Devon, Pembrokeshire or the lakes

Needs to be somewhere child friendly, ideally some sort of cottage so not ancomplex with loads of other people, I like to be away from people, somewhere the kids can be outside so preferably a private garden or fields outside. Lastly, needs to be cheap. Paid £80pn last year on Airbnb and had all those things.

Thanks

Why not have a look at House/pet sitting. There's a joining fee but then you get free accommodation and there's loads of places in the UK (and abroad) to choose from. There's some outstanding places out there x

Imustbemad00 · 08/02/2019 07:44

I have 2 young kids. Not sure it would work. Also I’m a bit of a clean freak so I think I’d be happier as a ‘guest’ in that sense.

Check out Puddleduck cottages in Shropshire.

North Devon is beautiful as is the Somerset Coast. We like staying around the Watchet area which gives easy access to Dunster castle, Cheddar caves, Wookey hole, Weston super mare, Exmoor wildlife park, and the steam railway that takes you along to Minehead where you'll find Butlins which is good for a day out. Unfortunately the cottage we rented has been sold but it's a lovely part if the country to check out. We usually use www.homeaway.co.uk to find accommodation.

I don't have any specific accommodation recommendations, as I usually camp, but the Northumberland coast sounds perfect for you - stunning, practically deserted beaches, lots of castles, nice villages with lots of holiday cottages. It depends how far you want to travel though, it's quite a long drive from London (straight up the A1).

Maenporth estate in Cornwall
Brownscombe luxury
No Place in Sennen Cove

Grumpbum123 · 08/02/2019 09:03

Should say luxury glamping

hammeringinmyhead · 08/02/2019 09:09

How about the New Forest? I've not found it that expensive.

DerelictWreck · 08/02/2019 09:15

Norfolk :)

bellabasset · 08/02/2019 09:21

Go onto Airbnb and check out Fowey, where Dawn French lives in a house that the govt used in the WW2.There are lovely walks along the coast, plenty of lovely cafes and pubs, you can spend the day at Heligan or the complete opposite, the Eden Project. If you like cycling you have either Pentewan or Bodmin to cycle the Camel trail to Padstow.

Imustbemad00 · 08/02/2019 17:24

Thankyou. I’ll look at all of those places. Devon does appeal to me. Just want to find the perfect place, but I feel like where we stayed before was pretty perfect so I’ll probably struggle to find something similar.

West coast of Scotland! Lots of lovely little cottages, world class beaches, one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Or one of the islands - Skye and Mull are both superb.

Imustbemad00 · 08/02/2019 17:28

Northumberland is probably a bit far but I’ll have a look and would consider if it seemed worth it. Same with Cornwall, the thought of the long drive puts me off.

Anyone know anything about wales?

Or the lakes?

Mountain scenery?

Imustbemad00 · 08/02/2019 17:29

@Heronymous
Any specific places along the coast, so I can look it up as a starting point?

Sorry, I’m forgetting how at Scotland is 😂 that’s definitely not a car journey I want to do with the kids

You really don’t need to go too far from London to find all of that. Pembrokeshire and the Lakes are a long journey with small children.

New Forest, Kent, Sussex would all deliver and be a shorter time travelling. If you want Devon the South Hams area is gorgeous ( well when it’s not blowing a gale and chucking it down Grin ).

Dotty1970 · 08/02/2019 17:33

Yabu post where your meant to

@Dotty1970
Apologies, the fact that you saw the post title, took the time to open it and post a reply, means that I’m of course being vu

I know Kent and Sussex quite well and I’ve never found anywhere as peaceful and beautiful as I did in Dorset. It’s a different type of countryside if you know what I mean.

StoneofDestiny · 08/02/2019 17:59

Lakes good is weather is clement and you like walking. Otherwise - can be a problem.
The Cotswolds - gorgeous.

ATBhinchers · 08/02/2019 18:05

Where did you stay before please do you have a link OP? Been looking for somewhere to stay in Dorset for a holiday with our toddlers and really struggling!

Imustbemad00 · 08/02/2019 18:39

Lakehayes cottages. Was lovely there. On the borders of Somerset, Devon and Dorset so lots to do. The Jurassic coast was lovely, Lyme Regis too. My kids just loved being out in the nature so we didn’t really spend much money.

I might just go back there 😂

Daisymay2 · 08/02/2019 18:46

Have you thought about the Suffolk or Norfolk coasts?

Icandothis2019 · 08/02/2019 19:10

The lakes is a beautiful part of the country. You can pick a base and then drive to some of the different nearby towns. We have stayed in Bowness, we took the boat to Lakeside, went on the steam train there (you can buy ticket when you buy boat ticket) and round the museum. There's also an aquarium. Lots of attractions nearby. Not sure about the type of accommodation you're looking for we have stayed there in a hotel and on a caravan park.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/02/2019 19:28

For me, it would have to be Bovey Tracey in Devon. Beautiful peaceful town (but with lots of facilities), a very quick journey to the coast / Dartmoor / Exeter, stunning countryside, great inexpensive restaurants and much, much cheaper than staying at the actual seaside
