haemorrhoidectomy

I consider myself to be quite a stoical sort of guy...I try and make the best of situations..".one door closes ..another opens".
Had a spinal fusion in 1994 that cost me my professional career and became a househusband..full time.
Two great daughters 27 and 22....enjoyed the experience but a part of me always missed my health professional career.
Daily pain from spinal surgery but... hid it well .
So..when I advise ...NEVER HAVE A HAEMORRHOIDECTOMY UNLESS ABSOLUTELY THE LAST RESORT.......it is because I believe it is solid advice.
Had mine on 10/9/2018....two haemorrhoids surgically removed.
Despite lactulose daily.painkillers etc.....it is excruciating still to poo.
Admitted to hospital 8 weeks post op after falling asleep mid afternoon and waking up at 6.15 p.m feeling" disorientated and detached"
Diagnosed as exhaustion from pain and lack of sleep for 8 weeks.
At this stage I have not a shred of confidence that this will ever improve......I am far worse post op than pre- op......so you make your choices.no guarantees and live with the consequences.
The general advice it that most patients will feel better 2 weeks post -op and recover in two months.
Hope this helps.
Felt I had to give the other side of the story....when you don't recover ..

That sounds awful, you poor thing Flowers
I had heard the surgery wasn't pleasant and that it's better to put up with the piles unless you are in agony.

RegIsDead · 07/02/2019 12:37

I know a woman who had this done and she was off sick for ages after the op. She advised others never to have it.

That’s awful OP, I’m sorry Flowers. Point taken about hemorrhoid surgery. I’ve got a few persistent ones since having my children but it’s nowhere near what you describe so I guess better to just live with it. It sounds like you’ve had bad luck. I’ve had a 3-level spinal fusion too and it limited my range of motion a little bit but not to where it would stop me from doing anything. Have you gone back to the doctors (spine and and hemorrhoids) to see if there is anything more they can do? With medical stuff you have to be persistent in advocating for yourself. I wish you then best in working all of this out. Flowers

I've had mine taken off with elastic band things like lambs tails. Sorry if it's tmi but it was painless. Presumably not an option for OP but hopefully an option for others. So do go to the doctor if you have uncomfortable piles.

BarbarianMum · 07/02/2019 13:29

The elastic band thing worked well for me too but I dont know if it is suitable for everyone.

My mum had a haemorroidectomy 50 years ago and says it was worse than childbirth but she did make a full recovery after 3 weeks.

I had an op. In and out in a day. One night to recover from GA. No lasting damage. Situation much improved. Sorry it hasn't worked for you.....but it does for some.

lerrimknowyouretheyir · 07/02/2019 14:29

My DH had one last year and had no issues with recovery. Hope you’re feeling better.

longearedbat · 07/02/2019 15:46

That sounds terrible. Do they know why you are still in so much pain? Have they done anything to try and relieve it?

John95 · 07/02/2019 16:41

Some encouraging replies and thank you to all.
Just to reiterate....I am solely referring to...surgical removal of haemorrhoids......NOT..banding of haemorrhoids ,T.H.D PROCEDURE(trans anal haemorrhoidal dearterialisation), laser treatment or stapling.
Most patients recover well.
My post was solely to emphasize that surgical haemorrhoidectomy should only be considered as a last resort when all else fails and the haemorrhoids cannot be lived with because one can be left worse after and not better.

I agree with you. I have 2 Grade IV ones, 1 internal and 1 external/internal. I had 1 thrombose a couple of years ago and die off. I'll live with them as long as I can! 2 friends experienced exactly what you did.

John95 · 07/02/2019 17:18

Sincerely glad it worked out well for you...would not wish this present experience on anyone.
Best wishes for the future

The ONLY way I'd have mine removed is if I could pay for HALO procedure privately, truth be told. I know they will skew any bowel screening I do when I'm 50 and I'll be referred for colonoscopy as a result as they do bleed from time to time but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

John95 · 08/06/2019 21:11

An update....haemorrhoidectomy 10/9 2018...removal surgically of two haemorrhoids.
As of today.......I remain on lactulose daily and still awaiting healing.
A further examination under G.A is to be done some distant day in the future(This is Northern Ireland...we pay our politicians for not sitting in Government for years... whilst crucial services come to a standstill as there is no sitting Minister to sign them off. They fight over Orange and GREEN WHEN the rest of the country has moved on and left them behind)
I have no confidence I will ever heal..and that is o.k...there are worse things happening in peoples lives.
Once again.. FOR MANY this surgery will have a happy ending.....for some it will not so...only have it as a LAST RESORT.
Take care all!
