In agony after a deep filling! Please help!

I had a very deep filling done last Thursday in one of my upper molars. The tooth had had a filling in it previously which had come away and some of the tooth had also chipped off. The dentist drilled further and put a new filling in and said that the tooth may require a root canal in the future if the filling doesn't work.

A day after I had the filling done I was absolutely fine, but on day three and four I was in agony. I was in so much pain that I was in tears. Day five and six have been a bit better but I'm still getting sudden bouts of deep, throbbing pain. I hate taking pain killers so I only take paracetamol and ibuprofen when I can't bare the pain any longer.

I went back to see the dentist yesterday because of the pain but he said to carry on taking painkillers and wait another couple of weeks to see if the tooth settles. If not, he will then consider root canal.

I really can't bare the thought of having to put up with this pain any longer. I've had to take a few days off work for this and I've been unable to do much activity with my toddler so I feel really guilty. We are also going abroad in a weeks time so I really need to get it sorted.

How long does a deep filling usually take to settle? What advice can anyone give? The pain gets so bad that I just want to pull the tooth out.

Thanks.

I know you don’t like taking painkillers but my advice is start sinking them .... the trick is to take them on a strict two hour rotation alternating ibuprofen with the paracetamol and take them constantly for a few days. Don’t wait until you are in agony and then take them as it won’t help as much - you need to manage the pain constantly somit doesn’t become unbearable .

I’ve had this before and it took a couple of weeks to settle down. Good luck!

Rememberyourhat · 06/02/2019 23:19

It will settle down, not much help to tonight I know, sorry.

Sensodyne toothpaste helps .

Ashana · 06/02/2019 23:21

Thanks guys. How many weeks does it take? I'm so worried that I will have to go on holiday in this state.

My dentist suggest to ds to take
solphodine (can’t spell it sorry) and once it’s dissolved take a mouthful and swill it around your mouth before swallowing, and do it for each mouthful. And also take ibuprofen.

pinkdelight · 06/02/2019 23:25

Oh god I feel your pain. Literally - had a filling that they said would stop the pain but it's ten times worse and I'm taking all the painkillers. Just sunk the last of my codeine and praying it'll mean I can sleep, then I'm heading back to the dentist's first thing. Last time this happened I got antibiotics. They should give you something whether it's meds or treatment. It's way too painful to function otherwise. (Though do take the paracetamol and ibuprofen on rotation - mad not to in the circumstances)

God I thought I’d posted this Blush

I had one yesterday and been in bits since. Agony and very sensitive. My boss’ husband is a dentist and has recommended clove oil dabbed on (tastes revolting though), Sensodyne toothpaste and ibuprofen. I find that paracetamol doesn’t really do much.

I’m dosed up now hopefully for the night. Struggling to eat much at all though.

I had this, more or less exactly. The pain on day 2 and 3 was unbearable. I couldn't even think straight. Rang the dentist who said it was unlikely to settle and gave me an emergency appointment for a root canal as the nerve was inflamed. I wouldn't spend days eating painkillers, I'd ring back and tell them you can't put up with this for another two weeks - that's just ridiculous.

I read the thread title and made Kenneth Williams noises.

Legumewaffle · 06/02/2019 23:49

I'm with showmeshoyu. Totally went down the wrong path with that thread title..Blush

Legumewaffle · 06/02/2019 23:50

No advice but I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Totally went down the wrong path

Hence the pain... matron.

Mmmhmmm · 06/02/2019 23:55

I thought this thread was going to be about something else...

Take the painkillers OP. Flowers

showmeshoyu · 06/02/2019 23:56

Yes and also, i hope you feel more chipper quickly. If you can stomach codeine, I've always found it's just good enough at disassociating you from localised pain.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/02/2019 00:01

Chew on a clove or two. Keep in mouth and chew, it will help.

over50andfab · 07/02/2019 00:03

OTC codeine all the way. I find with bad tooth pain paracetamol doesn’t touch it and ibuprofen not much better.

RupaulsGagRace · 07/02/2019 00:05

Your title made me think of pie for some reason...

Its tike to crack open the co-codamol OP. Paracetamol is like putting a kids plaster on an axe wound...its not gonna touch the sides if youve got toothache!

I advise getting a small bottle of spirit/whisky (like an airplane miniature size) and 'holding' a gulp of it over the affected side of the mouth so it hopefully numbs the tooth, hold for as long as possible and then just swallow.

Im wondering if the pain is sign of infection...my dh had the exact same as you on both sides of his mouth around 3 weeks apart and dentist said the same about root canal for both teeth. One hurt longer than the other, still hurt the day after so he went bacm and it ended up being due to having and infection. Soon as he took antibiotocs it was fine

I must just have a terrible mind.

Ashana · 07/02/2019 00:18

Thanks all, I'm just trying to get some sleep now but it's difficult. I now also have mild ear ache and my cheekbone hurts too. I'm going to ring up tomorrow for an emergency appointment.

I am so anxious about going to the dentist and really can't stomach the thought of a root canal but i am willing to do anything to make the pain go away.

I don't know how I'll manage on holiday if I'm like this.

Did the root canal go ok? And how long did it take you to recover from it?

Past 4am and I'm wide awake with toothache. Has anyone had an instance where it settled down after a week or so? I really don't know what to do.

Woke up at 5 having taken 1000mg paracetamol and 600mg of ibuprofen at 11.30pm.

Not sure how much more I can take, both of the painkillers and the pain!

Pk37 · 07/02/2019 06:46

I agree with the sensodyne toothpaste , it definitely helps but if it’s excruciating then I’d have to go back, that’s not normal and you could end up with an infection

ohmywhattodo · 07/02/2019 06:54

I had a really deep filling once - I had been in quite a lot of pain beforehand - after it did settle - took a couple of weeks BUT the pain was less after the filling and got less each day. I would suggest that if it’s still pretty excruciating then go back! Tbh having read up on root canals I decided that if the dentist suggested one I would decline and have the tooth extracted & an implant if necessary. Fortunately the tooth settled but the filling is still the temporary one that was kind of dumped in in the emergency appointment 7 yrs ago! The dentist decision being that as the pain had stopped he didn’t want to drill again and would leave alone unless the tooth started to cause problems (touch wood it hasn’t!! 2 x rays since day all is stable with the tooth and filling)

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 07/02/2019 07:03

OP
I had this after a root canal
I went to work and then when the painkiller worked off , whoa !

You need a way stronger painkiller . And also you need to rule out an infection

Honestly in the end I had mine extracted .

Sending 💊 and ⛏ x

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 07/02/2019 07:05

I am no dentist but for that much pain I would go back and refuse to leave without a resolution

I don’t think this much pain is usual
