The pill for just a couple of months back to back?

Apologies for the rubbish title- I'd no idea what to what write, and posting in aibu for traffic.

DH and I due to head away for a romantic few days without the kids to celebrate a special anniversary but my period is due right bang in the middle of the trip. So, should I go to the gp and see if I can get something to stop it? I get so tired and the heat won't help me either to say the least!

Yes, have done, no probs.

Ragnarthe · 06/02/2019 21:27

I used to do it occasionally, doesn't the leaflet say you can?

WendyImhome · 06/02/2019 21:27

Yes, I’ve just done this very thing

OrigamiZoo · 06/02/2019 21:28

There is no need for a break either, it's just to replicate the menstrual cycle in case we missed it, so I've read. Confused

WendyImhome · 06/02/2019 21:28

Take the pill back to back that is, never seen the GP

cavycavy · 06/02/2019 21:28

There was something in the papers recently along the lines m that this has been perfectly safe for years, the only reason women have been told to have a monthly bleed was to make it more acceptable to the pope.

Or something like that.

Either way, it’s safe.

annikin · 06/02/2019 21:29

Take it back to back, no problem at all.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 06/02/2019 21:31

I haven't been on the pill got years but would absolutely do this if I was

There was a Jeremy Vine feature a few weeks ago on the radio saying there is no medical reason for having the 7 day break and withdrawal bleed but when the pill was developed in the 1960s they marketed it that may in an attempt to get the Pope's approval Shock

Justmeagain123 · 06/02/2019 21:37

I've taken norethisterone prescribed by the Dr, felt a bit rubbish on it (I'm not good on hormonal things) and quite heavy when I did come on, but would take again, it's great for being able to enjoy a holiday! Dr was lovely about it although I think you can get from a pharmacist?

PinkGin24 · 06/02/2019 21:41

Yep all good. I generally try and avoid doing more than 3 months back to back.

Stillpotteringabout · 06/02/2019 22:46

Great info, thanks everyone.
I haven't been on the pill for years and I'm quite hesitant to me about with my hormones, trying to weigh up the process and cons, maybe I should just keep topped up with paracetamol!
@Justmeagain123 thanks, I was wondering about norethisterone too.

Yes when I got my recent prescription the nurse told me they’ve now decided it’s better to take it back to back constantly as you’re just tricking your body. I used to double up for reasons like this and was always fine.

Tink88 · 06/02/2019 23:07

Yes always do it for holidays or something I don’t want to be on my period for. 10 years never had a problem

Justmeagain123 · 07/02/2019 08:15

@Stillpotteringabout if you're not on the pill definitely look into norethisterone, seems unnecessary to go on a contraceptive when you can literally just start taking this as your period is due and stop it when you're ready for it to start 🙂

MinesaPinot · 07/02/2019 08:55

I haven't been on the pill for years but yes, I used to do it for holidays etc. I remember checking with my GP before I did it the first time and they said no problem, although I have a recollection that they said don't do it for more than 2 months in a row, just to give the body a break.
