To have not known schools can force pupils to stay after exams? Any teachers confirm?

DS has a subject teacher who has been in school two years . He's got great results the last two years. 100% pass rate.

This year he has got DS who is one of the few of his pupils with diagnosed learning needs which affect him academically significantly.

He is not happy that DS is on target for a level one distinction and not the level two distinction he expects from his pupils (I'm bloody thrilled with a level one distinction as DS is only doing level two at college.) and is really ramming home the level 2 distinction he wants to all pupils. He's told them today according to DS that he can stop them from leaving in June and they can be kept at school after exams if he isn't happy with his coursework and basically keep them working on it until he's happy or July ends

I thought when they submitted their coursework and did their exams that was that. We are actually considering leaving England as soon as exams are finished so would be a bit far to come.

Can they refuse to submit coursework if he isn't happy with the level meaning that they won't get any score if we do move?
Can they kick up a fuss about any other exams if we just didn't return?

That sounds like what I’d call a motivational threat.

noblegiraffe · 06/02/2019 19:32

Look up the coursework submission date for his course?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 06/02/2019 19:32

Why would he keep him doing coursework? The marks go to the exam board at end April/start May. That’s the end of coursework

RolyRocks · 06/02/2019 19:34

No, he can’t due to exam deadlines but he will be using this to try to get better results.

Incidentally, don’t book a holiday until after June 26th as that is a new exam contingency day. Due to the Grenfell tragedy and young people still having to take their exams the day after, there is now a contingency day that should an emergency occur. A days exam can be withheld from all and re-arranged for the contingency day.

LokiBear · 06/02/2019 19:39

There is a stipulation that pupils need to stay in the country until the end of June. I wpuld imagine coursework deadlines are in May though.

TeenTimesTwo · 06/02/2019 19:40

I guess this isn't GCSEs?

For DD's (L3) BTEC there was a submission deadline of, I think, 1st July. After the last assignment people were brought back to improve a previous assignment if it was making a grade difference. (I think, DD's BTEC is mainly blotted out in my memory).

Somethingsmellsnice · 06/02/2019 19:45

If he is in year 12 then he can be asked to remain until the end of term if the 6th Form school/college requires them to.

Troublesomeclucks · 06/02/2019 19:47

I'm trying to check Noble but I'm a bit confused as to what to look at as school have said it's a level 2 but college said it's not a proper level 2.
He's only doing level two at college.

I've found one that says '4 July 2019
Deadline to submit learner achievement via Edexcel Online or EDIFACT EDI for UCAS/ DfE candidates' but I've no idea if I'm even on the right thing.

DS is certain and even saying but Mum Mr X even brought S back from holiday last year.

I did wonder if it was motivation..They are going to push DS over the edge mentally though by telling him stuff like this as he's utterly miserable and crossing off the days there :(

The legal school leaving date in England is the last Friday in June of Year 11. He can’t be forced to stay after that date.

Troublesomeclucks · 06/02/2019 19:50

Sorry it's year 11 and it's a Btech which he's doing alongside GCSE. June is fine! It's the I can make you come back after everyone has left in July that has thrown DS.

Comefromaway · 06/02/2019 19:50

If he is not staying at that school then he absolutely cannot he forced to stay on.

Troublesomeclucks · 06/02/2019 19:51

Comefromaway (that's my favourite musical!) Do you know where I can find that info please?

If this is BTEC as above qualifications aren’t normally claimed until the 5th July. We’ve had students back in the past completing coursework up to the end of June.
Theoretically they could not claim if you refuse to finish work however I can’t see that would be in their best interest at all. I’d ask for a meeting with the subject teacher and lead internal verifier or quality nominee. (Assuming this is BTEC but if not ignore all the above!)

user1471530109 · 06/02/2019 19:52

Yes he can! It's not have, but sounds like btec. Back in the day of common btecs, we used to keep some back to complete the course. This way, it wasn't causing concerns with revision classes for GCSEs etc.

Beach11 · 06/02/2019 19:53

If it’s a BTEC course which it sounds like it is he can be kept in school until 30th June

Leeds2 · 06/02/2019 19:54

Could you email the Head of Dept for the subject, and ask them to confirm the deadline for submitting coursework? If necessary, say you are confused by what his teacher is telling him.
Fwiw, a friend's DD was told she had to go into school for two weeks following the last GCSE, so that the whole year could do enrichment activities, and preparation for Sixth Form. They were told it was compulsory. Friend's DD was leaving to go to another Sixth Form, so didn't go into school, and nothing ever came of it.

Comefromaway · 06/02/2019 19:54

I’m going to see it during half term.

I know about the date in regards to children’s performing licences but I think it’s on the gov.uk website somewhere.

Troublesomeclucks · 06/02/2019 19:59

I've found it thanks Comefromaway. We are going in March. Can't wait.

Myusername2015 yes it's a BTEC thank you.
Could a teacher refused to submit a finished coursework which wasn't at the level the teacher was happy with?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 06/02/2019 21:35

I think I would be querying the teacher’s comments with the school, especially as it’s stressing your DS.

‘Please confirm that DS will not be expected to work on this coursework in July as he has got the impression from his teacher that he may be asked to do this. Please also confirm that his coursework will definitely be submitted because again, he appears to have been told that this is up to the teacher to decide.’.
