To ask what could have caused this damage?

Hi
Posting here for traffic. We recently completed a loft conversion in the house so the windows were only fitted in the last month.
We moved our bedroom upto the loft in the last couple of days and have noticed that we have a crack in one of the windows. It's on the outside of the pane so we cannot think what it might be. We have artificial grass so no lawn mower spitting out stones and doubtful it would reach this high anyway. No kids so no one has been in the garden throwing things up.
I can only wonder if the window was faulty from the start and we didn't notice, or whether it was the window cleaner who cleaned 2 days ago.
Any opinions would be gratefully received Smile

To ask what could have caused this damage?

Hmmm I'm not sure what a window cleaner would use that would cause that damage??

Youshallnotpass · 06/02/2019 15:13

Could be a bird collision, not completely unknown to happen

Laiste · 06/02/2019 15:18

It could be a bird dropping a stone in flight and it's sailed into your window on the way down? I've seen magpies round here carrying things about. Are there any drone hobbyists about round there? One of them could have bashed the window?

That is unusual damage at that height.

longwayoff · 06/02/2019 15:18

If its a Velux window, ring them. After sales is superb.

XmasPudPlsd · 06/02/2019 15:20

@longwayoff funnily enough we noticed today that one of the velux windows at the front is damaged too! Although looks very different to this and think it may be due to the change in temperature, and yes their customer service team were great- thanks x

@longwayoff sorry should have said- this particular window isn't velux just our front ones are

@Laiste I did wonder if it could be bird related and thought that a stone might be about the right size to have caused the damage I just wasn't sure if a bird could drop it at an angle so that the stone hit the window- hmmmm. Confused

@Laiste there is a drone enthusiast around here but I haven't noticed it in some time- thanks for replying can

I've had a window crack from a falling stone. I can only imagine that a flying bird was carrying & dropped the stone.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 06/02/2019 15:28

Are they double glazed units?

We had a situation when one of ourrelatively newly installed bedroom windows suddenly cracked. Fortunately, it didn’t shatter or shower the room with glass and we knew nothing external had caused it, because it was in the evening and nothing had been near it.

It could be that a change in temperature has caused part of the double glazing to ‘blow’ and therefore crack. The installers replaced it.

XmasPudPlsd · 06/02/2019 15:30

Hi @Foxyloxy1plus1
Yes they are double glazed- I did wonder if the change of temp had anything to do with it. Given that we have lived here 5 years and none of our other windows have ever been cracked or damaged and these windows are only a few weeks old....

Could be a bird, we have a huge pigeon fly headlong into one of our upstairs windows, poor thing. Huge mark on the window but thankfully not damaged. Pigeon didn't do too well though, but it looked like it was an instant end for him at least :(

Maddy70 · 06/02/2019 15:38

That happened to me last week and my windows have been in 15 yrs. It was the change in temperature apparently

Sonders · 06/02/2019 15:39

I reckon it's a contact/temperature combo. It probably took a little unnoticeable dink from a pesky bird or their dropped pebble, and then the freezing/thawing exasperated leading to a big crack.

longwayoff · 06/02/2019 15:44

Happened to one of our velux last week, stress fracture? Already fixed free of charge by Velux, they're about ten years old too. Excellent serviceSmile. Good luck with the other windows.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/02/2019 15:45

Ask your window cleaner. They carry insurance for cracked panes and have very good relationships with local glazers.

We asked ours and he wasn't too fussed as to whether or not he was responsible, he just sent the glazer round.

RelaisBlu · 06/02/2019 15:56

We got a cracked window pane once when a bird flew straight into it

FaultInMyStars · 06/02/2019 16:05

An air gun pellet or a stress fracture in my opinion.

CandyFlossLegend · 06/02/2019 16:14

I thought pellet gun shot. It looks like the chip on a windscreen when a stone hits it at speed.
