He's not really going to retire from Radio 4's Today show, is he?
I'm sure he's promised to do so many times in the past but trundled on in his patronising, pompous manner. Sucking up to some politicians and being condescending to intelligent women. And waving the flag for Brexit.

He’s been truly terrible on anything science-related for years - in fact, thinking about it, for decades - I remember a sciencey mate of mine guesting on Today and having to sort Humphrys out on a gobsmackingly dumb comment at least fifteen years ago.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 06/02/2019 16:53

He puts me off listening to Today. I want to hear what the interviewee has to say! Surely that's the point of interviewing someone.

CreakyBlinder · 06/02/2019 16:53

His interview with the woman from the Rwandan Tourist Board should have been the final nail in his coffin.

He spoke to her like she was an ignorant piece of shit, and she calmly refuted his every point. She was awesome, and he was just a racist old fool.

Helmetbymidnight · 06/02/2019 16:55

i found he has failed to challenge brexiteers when they blatantly lie- offer unicorns.
its disappointed me.

KissingInTheRain · 06/02/2019 17:08

I do hope it's true he's going. He has become more and more needlessly aggressive - I once listened slack jawed as he tore into someone who was on to talk about something entirely non-contentious.

He doesn’t always get the tone right, I agree. But there are so many patsy interviews now that a good interrogation of a guest - whatever their party or cause - is welcome IMO.

Paxman was constantly vilified by all sides for his pugnacious style. But he got at the truth!

I don't think UEA was chuffed to be labeled 'obscure' and harbouring dishonest scientists followed by grovelling apol from BBC.

Another time Humphrys went off on ill-informed diatribes about climate change science. Why anyone agreed to be interviewed by him I don't get. He often barely let people get a word in edgewise.

BlueThing · 06/02/2019 17:31

I don’t think Paxman did get at the truth. His style of interviewing shut people down. You need someone clever and crafty to get the interviewer to reveal the truth/hang themselves with their own rope.

I think Andrew Neill is good. He just throws all these facts at people (i.e. Jacob Rees-Smug and watches them squirm.

toomuchtooold · 06/02/2019 17:43

I'd be very glad to see him go. I think he and Pacman contributed to this current toxic mistrust of all government (not saying that MPs and government didn't also contribute) by being so dismissively aggressive to everyone.m, making it sound as if they were all worthy of contempt. I also think that when politics fell off a cliff in 2016, because they were already so dismissive of politicians, there was nowhere for them to go. They'd cried wolf.

TheMallard · 07/02/2019 06:53

I don't mind him actually. But I panicked when he said it was 4th February on the 5th Grin

I felt he's getting too old for the early starts.

GoFiguire · 07/02/2019 07:03

The OP was being ironic about getting his name wrong and the facts wrong.
