To panic this is something serious?!

A year ago I had pain in my knee which grew worse. It was swollen, hot to touch and I could barely walk on it. I have no memory of knocking it yet an MRI revealed edema of the bone. Throughout this time I would get tremors, like nerves twitching, up and down my legs. It took months to heal and the simplest thing could cause me to go back to square one, like lifting my toddler or a wrong step.

I have a family history of MS but when I mentioned this I was told it's not hereditary.

Yesterday I was walking down the stairs when my leg gave way, now I am back to square one and have to use a stick to walk and am in incredible pain. After falling, last night I had nerve like tremors through both legs and my arm, the knee is swollen and hot to touch.

Drs seem dismissive but I am terrified it is autoimmune related.

Please can anyone share similar experiences, what could be happening? I have spent most of the last year using a stick to walk and been in pain, I feel clumsy, I don't remember things like I used to... I have just turned 40 and feel like I'm 90!

I do not have much advice but I came to handhold as I'm in exactly this position!
I turned 40 last month and am currently walking with a stick with MS being banded around.

Injuries will flare up and do take timw to heal and there could have been nerve damage so that alone I wouldn't be too worried about but with the other things you have added too I would want checking out.
Just out of curiosity with you saying about memory have they checked your B12? Pernicious anemia can flag a LOT of MS type symptoms and a number of people on my support group have been misdiagnosed with MS when it's been PA.

What does your GP say? I’d ask for referral to Orthopaedic, and then Neurologist if the Ortho’s can’t find a mechanical reason. ‘Hot and swollen’ would indicate inflammation and/or infection.

Thanks for your replies. Dr said it will heal on its own and will do another MRI in April if not. That's it.
They diagnosed arthritis initially but changed their minds after MRI to edema.

I had/have MS (I say had because I had HSCT and it's stopped). You really need an MRI to tell, it will show lesions if you have them. Probably also a spinal tap, MS often shows ocular bands.

MS is like a fingerprint, it's different for everyone. Some people will have tremors, some vision problems, some balance. I know someone who has memory problems but can easily run marathons.

I also know it can run in families. Someone I did HSCT with had an uncle, grandparent and cousin with MS. Pregnancy can also trigger it (as it did in my case). Other people are just bloody unlucky.

You said you had an MRI. Was that just on your knee? You really need brain and spine.

Probably not helpful but I found it so and thought I'd share.

Over Christmas I had a cancer diagnosis and was referred for a biopsy and further testing. The doctor (GP), naturally couldn't tell me how serious it was and if/how far it had spread but did say this:

"Don't worry about it until someone with letters after their name tells you to worry about it"

It seemed a bit ridiculous at the time but made me smile and did actually help to the stress whilst I waiting (seemingly forever, for a full diagnosis)
