To ask how you get used to wearing glasses?

I recently started wearing glasses for distance, I take them off when reading, but I can't get used to wearing them. They fit, they work and I don't mind wearing them to drive. I can not get used to walking about wearing them though. When I drive to the supermarket I take them off before going in otherwise I feel 'weird'

Is this something that will pass? Something that other new wearers feel? Or am o just way too odd?

You did not use the wrong term, OP, they are distance glasses. The people questioning this are wrong. Obviously distance glasses are not just for driving as you still need to be able to see to walk around too! (Although yes some people only use them for driving).

Technically, as far as an optician is concerned, “distance” means anything 6 metres or more away.

Anyway, the best way to get used to them is to keep wearing them and don’t keep taking them off. Unless you still haven’t got used to them after a couple weeks full time wear, or you are having serious problems, in which case go back to the optician.

Like others said, you just get used to it. I've had mine for 16years now, forget I'm even wearing.
I do get a shock when I take them off & realise how dirty they are sometimes (finger marks, water etc..) & I've not noticed.

I had to start wearing glasses for work (computers) and didn’t need them for anything beyond arms length distance but I really struggled. In the end it wasn’t until I got varifocals with plain glass for the distance bit that I found myself wearing them more often and not noticing. For me it was the whole changing in and out of focus thing that I found difficult to cope with. With the varifocals it’s all in focus all of the time so much easier to forget about them.

You could try the reverse - clear glass for close up merging into your prescription for distance. I now feel odd if I’m sitting at my desk without them, a bit like sitting in a car without a safety belt - it doesn’t feel right.

I spent an age choosing frames, they feel much better on than my off the shelf sunglasses which I used to wear for a few hours a day driving. Did you get varifocals? The fact that they're acting as sunglasses can make wearing them in the summer worthwhile, and hopefully you're then used to them before winter comes again.

Distance lenses are not just for driving! They are for anything beyond about 0.5m from your eyes.

OP, I genuinely have to some times put my hand up to check because I can't tell if I'm wearing my glasses or not. You'll get used to them, I promise. Try not to take them off because you feel weird or self-conscious. The more you wear them the sooner you'll get used to them.

Thanks for clarifying the 'distance' thing. I thought they were distance but got confused when people asked why I was wearing them!
