Go to work with conjunctivitis

I've had a virus so I've been off work for two days with it. Feeling better this evening and planning to you back to work tomorrow. My 2 year old dd has conjunctivitis but we have family to look after her tomorrow so I'm able to go to work. After spending the day with her I think I may have caught conjunctivitis in one eye. I work in an office. I've not been back at work for long. My mum just mentioned how contagious conjunctivitis is and that I shouldn't be going to work if I have it.

Wibu to go to work? Surely it's not that big of a deal?

I went to work with it. Bathe it regularly and have good hand hygiene. No one caught it. I wasn't unwell.

Mumof1DS · 05/02/2019 18:52

Also iirc, the NHS website says there's no need to be off.

Absolutely go to work

I’ve never worked out the drama with conjunctivitis. Doesn’t make you feel poorly, doesn’t impact on you physically
Just an itchy red eye. Suck it up is my approach

Go to work!
It's highly unlikely you're going to share towels with your colleagues. Avoid rubbing your eyes and wash your hands regularly if you do.

NannyR · 05/02/2019 18:53

Nhs advice is that you are ok to go to work or school with conjunctivitis.

Littlebelina · 05/02/2019 18:54

NHS say that you can go to school\nursery with it so don't think most workplaces would be that impressed if you took time off. Just try not to rub your eyes and be vigilant with hand washing. You can get drops from a pharmacy to treat

squirrelnutkins1 · 05/02/2019 18:55

I've been in this week with it

ChaosMoon · 05/02/2019 18:58

I had conjunctivitis. I know it can be mild, and just itchy eyes, but this was severe. Some of the worst pain I've had in my life. It was weeks before I could open my eyes (if I opened the other one, both would move to track what I was seeing, which was horrific). I still have revenge daydreams about finding out who gave it to me and sandpapering their eyeballs. If you can stop it spreading, great, but by god you're going to need to be on top of washing your hands.

Unless you are working in healthcare setting, you can go to work.
Kids are kept home from creche cos theu put theyre fingers in their eyes and touch others andvid passes on that way.
I'd say an office will be fine once your hand hygiene is good.

LynetteScavo · 05/02/2019 19:16

Get drops from the oharmacy and then you'll be fine to be at work.

BusyMum47 · 05/02/2019 21:35

Absolutely go to work! I'm a teacher & have had it countless times - as long as you practice good hygiene & get some Brolene eye drops in there, it'll be fine in 24-48hrs & shouldn't stop you going about your day at all.

TheBigFatMermaid · 05/02/2019 21:37

I went to work in a care home with it. I rang and asked if they still wanted me in and my manager said that I could work as long as I promised not to rub my manky eye on the residents. I always got good comments about my hand hygiene in appraisals, so that was never a worry.

TheSandgroper · 05/02/2019 21:43

If you don't have/can't get drops, chamomile tea works. I just used a clean finger and put drops in on an hourly basis until the eye stopped weeping (which didn't take long) and then every few hours for a few days. Easy as.

BikeRunSki · 05/02/2019 21:48

Go to work, but take massive care with hygiene if it is viral conjunctivitis. DS end up in hospital on IV antibiotics when he was 17 months old as a complication of viral conjunctivitis.

I went to work with it recently. I was also full of cold. I was okay in a meeting in the morning but struggled with the computer work in the afternoon so took a half day sick. I think it depends what you do.
