My DS was heavily into archery as a child, he used to go to a club twice a week. From there he seems to have spring boarded into all sorts of old weapons, he watches lots of history videos on YouTube and loves the guys who dress up.

He went through a phase of watching an american bloke who dressed up as a soldier from the American revolution. Now he is onto JApanese culture and has been watching videos about swords, how they are made and looked after.

He has said that he wants to spend six months intensively studying 'the blade' not yre what this entails but surely that time could be used for a more modern, more applicable skill. Am I wrong for refusing to fund this?

He can get a pt job to fund his own weird hobby.

Maybe do your own research to decipher if he is a serial killer in the making......

Confusedbeetle · 05/02/2019 16:36

He could join one of these historical battle renactment groups

How exactly is he going to ‘master the blade’? Has he been watching a bit too much anime by any chance?

If his six months "intensively studying the blade" is going to net you guaranteed £££ then sure, why not? I'd fund it.

If - as I suspect - it will result in 0 income, he could get to fuck.

I was going to suggest reenacting as well beetle. I used to go 16th century and knew a fair number of people who made weapons and such like. It was pretty fun.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 05/02/2019 16:40

My DS gets similarly geeky about things. We've had trains, volcanoes, fossils, rocks, space, planes, supercars and now trains again. Some kids do.

He also knows loads about weapons from video games and is a pretty good shot with an air rifle. I don't particularly mind this, I love shooting (at targets) too.

You could try to steer his interest to make him concentrate on history rather than just weaponry, battles etc. How old is he?

Butchyrestingface · 05/02/2019 16:40

*I misread that as your husband, not son. Grin

Still, same thing pretty much applies. Assuming he's of working age, he needs to fund it.

shortlongterm · 05/02/2019 16:41

He does watch some anime, not a lot though. Most of what he watches is on YouTube and its nearly always related to old weapons or culture nowadays

This meme might put him off Grin

I like knives and swords and tbf it's a hobby you can make some very good money at

Would have a forge if I didn't live in a little flat

I used to be very interested in martial arts from early to late teens and jumped between them every year or so. Did tae kwon do and karate till I was 15 (funded by mum), and then walked the neighbour's dogs on weekends to fund wing chun and kendo when I was in my late teens.
