to think people don't understand Facebook's (lack of) 'privacy'?

There's an ad on Facebook at the mo for reusable fabric sanitary pads. A friend of mine posted a question in the comments so it appeared on my FB feed. I was vaguely interested in the concept, so had a browse and was appalled by the detailed comments women were posting, presumably not realising all their FB friends would get alerted !
Obviously posting about your own body and bleeding is your own choice, but some were making comments like "my daughter passes big clots and needs a new pad every hour" etc - I'm sure the daughter is going to be well-chuffed to see that Hmm ?

People need to learn that if you post on a public thread, ad or open group anyone can see your comments and FB may alert your friends that you've just posted there...

Won't most people who care about this simply have set their privacy settings differently from you, though?

SarahAndQuack · 05/02/2019 15:25

(And, TBH, I can't imagine caring if my mum or anyone else commented on clots during a period. It's not exactly shameful, is it?!)

Confusedbeetle · 05/02/2019 15:26

Facebook is the work of the devil and advertisers just want your data. Even tight privacy wont protect you

WaxMyrtle · 05/02/2019 15:27

I’m on a local Moms fb group and people post all about their children’s mental health/behavioural issues as if they are anonymous (like you would on MN).

Half the parents in their kids class must see the posts.

Maybe these women just aren’t ashamed of periods, everyone knows anyone born with a vagina has periods so 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s not like they commented on a link for a 10 inch thick double ended dildo is it now.

You can also change your setting so people can’t see of you wish too

What makes you think they don't know, they just don't care who sees their posts?

Just going to reply with the OP's words, which I agree with:

You can be as private or as public as you like with your own menstruation. My mum was a journalist when I was a child - I have very different opinion about what is acceptable to share on their behalf.

Of course everyone can post whatever they like about their own periods (although I'm not convinced people realise and do it knowingly/without caring) but my point was particularly about posting such private info about e.g. their daughter!

I thought even when it's a public thread, you could set your privacy such that friends didn't automatically get shared your comment. But if not, I stand corrected.

fluffyhamster · 05/02/2019 15:46

I know some of my friends don't understand how it works because in the past I've had conversations that go a bit like this:

Me: Was that new restaurant you were at last night good?

Friend: How did you know I was at X last night?

Me: oh, I saw you posted you had a nice meal...

Friend: but you weren't with me; I didn't tag you...

Me: No, but I just saw you'd posted on their Facebook page...

Friend: Why were you trawling through all my FB posts?

Me: Er... I wasn't, it was top of my feed...

Friend: Are you stalking me?

Me: Confused

Every few months it will go around that my FB friends make a status telling FB that they can't use their data. It will list laws etc. that are completely fake.

I have a friend who I have had to mute because she's constantly doing the 'like, comment and share to win' posts for completely fake accounts. Currently it's holidays where previously Ellen DeGeneres (who apparently couldn't spell her own name.)

At the moment my feed is full of people posting a “warning” to FB not to use their data.

It cites “the Rome Statute”

The Rome Statute relates to the International Criminal Court and establishes 4 key international crimes: genocide; crimes against humanity; war crimes and crimes of aggression.

The people blindly copying and pasting this stuff are educated - I find it exasperating.

aargh - it's the posts that are "URGENT! SHARE THIS IMMEDIATELY WITH ALL YOUR FRIENDS as it's a NEW SCAM" which get me... it's always some variant on scams involving people at petrol stations or cold callers and "the police have asked for this information to be shared as far and wide as possible" (of course they have Hmm) and it's my really very intelligent friends who insist on perpetuating them.
I usually just post a "See Snopes" and a link without comment....

The one about a fake missed parcel card was going around just before Christmas, it hasn't been an actual thing for YEARS as the numbers were shut down.

Also had an influx of people posting so that they could see all of their feed as it was apparently only showing a few of them.

slashlover · 05/02/2019 18:27

I link to Snopes and some people get REALLY angry.
