Might well get a flaming for being clueless but here goes....

I need to get my shower cubicle re-sealed and the grouting tidied up. I once had a handyman do the sealant but it quickly went black so I'm not sure he used the right stuff? Do I need a plumber? Please advise me and be kind!

I would get a Tiler.....

Fairylea · 05/02/2019 13:23

A handyman should be able to do that, ask about for local recommendations. A local Facebook page is usually a good place.

A tiler would also do a good job but they’re likely to be much more expensive.

Tiler, but sealant isn't too tricky. Cut the old sealant out, mask the tray to get neat lines, and resealable with anti moult kitchen/bathroom sealant. You Tube gives good 'how to' videos.

Tiler, of course!
Will investigate quality handymen too. May even consider having a go myself!

Haha, I am planning on putting up a similar question in the property section soon.

Have no idea and it's so easy to feel like you'll be ripped off if you ask the wrong person.

If your grout it just old and dirty don't bother with one of those Grout Pens, they are rubbish. Get a high pressure steam jet cleaner (mine is a very small handheld thing for £19.99 from The Range). Cleans grout really well especially if you paint bleach onto the lines first and leave it for 20 mins.

By 'grouting tidied up' what do you mean exactly? Has it come away or just dirty. If dirty then use vinegar and a cloth - my DH is a tiler and gets paid far to much money to do exactly this, outlay is a £2 bottle of vinegar and he pinches a cloth from under our sink! I do this in our kitchen and bathroom with white grout and it comes up great. (and a lot cheaper than £80 for half a days work at my DH's prices!)

Basically tilers are too expensive to use for cleaning but if the grouts actually come away or is cracking then yes your best bet is a tiler but you need to know what the grout was so they can match it (I mean colour and from which shop as colours vary between shops). Sealant as PP have said is easy done yourself, you tube can help with that.

Tiler or plumber would be best, you can put pics and a description on mybuilder.com local guys will give you a price and you can look at their reviews. For the silicone you can order mould resistant silicone or CT1 (pricey but tradesmen use it a lot) from amazon and have it to hand so you know its the right one being used. When they renew the silicone they should cut out the old stuff and clean the rest with a mould treatment and or bleach to make sure the new one takes properly. Lots of useful information on DIY wiki if you're not confident it helps you familiarise with whatever job you need done wiki.diyfaq.org.uk/index.php/Category:Plumbing if a job is new to me I tend to look at how it's done on YouTube so when I'm supervising I have a rough idea of what they need to do even if I can do it myself

Banana it hasn't come away, it's just not perfectly clean in places. I will definitely be getting the vinegar out, thank you for this tip!
