To think I should get more notice?

Student accommodation, privately owned but endorsed by the university.

Was emailed yesterday telling me that on the 6th (tomorrow) there will be electricity suppliers visiting my flat for a routine check.

I had plans to have people over this day which I'll have to change, not a big deal at all but got me wondering whether they need to give more notice?

I know university accommodation can be a bit dodgy with things like this, and students as tenants are at risk.

I'm not actually concerned as it doesn't make a difference to me this time, but it got me wondering whether less than 48 hours notice for non emergency entry is OK?

I'm pretty sure they only have to give you 24 hours notice to enter for a non-emergency. And they should arrange it for a "reasonable" time so shouldn't visit very early or very late.

Why do you need to cancel your plans if you'll be home anyway?Just let them in and let them get on with it.

SushiMonster · 05/02/2019 12:25

Why did you have to cancel your plans?

LagunaBubbles · 05/02/2019 12:28

Wouldn't have thought a routine check would take long, surely you can still have people over?

thecatsthecats · 05/02/2019 12:45

48h notice for a routine safety test that:

a) is to keep you safe and maintain their stat requirements and
b) surely won't affect your plans?

Yeah, I think they're fine tbh.

Lazypuppy · 05/02/2019 12:53

Why are you cancelling plans?

Confusedbeetle · 05/02/2019 12:54

The law says 24 hours notice

Confusedbeetle · 05/02/2019 12:54

You are lucky. Many landlords do not do routine electrical checks

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2019 12:58

What's uni accommodation dodgy about and what. Are students at risk of?Confused

The check is a good thing, why do you need more than a days notice for something that will take five mins and is for your safety?

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2019 13:00

And you don't need to cancel your plans, they can the check with you all in situ.
