Spending £100 a month on electricity

teapotter1 · 04/02/2019 09:13

I have no idea how I'm spending so much on electricity. I notice it as I got a £50 loyalty card from the gas company I'm with and it was gone in two weeks

I'm so mad at how much I'm spending on electricity, does anyone else have this problem and knows how to solve it?

I only have a two bedroom house with a toddler and baby

Thanks in advance

My direct debit is set to £33 pcm for gas and electricity as I built up so much credit but over summer and winter it averages out at about £45pcm.
It's not a particularly energy efficient house as the living room has the staircase in so the upper landing is toasty when the heatings on.
We do turn off anything not needed though and close room doors,I also don't heat the spare room or my bedroom.
£200a month for fuel sounds way too much.Id be checking readings and seeing that the payment rates match those that the company has set.

Mine is 106 a month total for gas and electric, three of us in an old terrace and we don't scrimp on heat and light. It used to be double and I mean double with the last supplier on a shite tarrif. Get yourself to USwitch! I'm with green network now they have some excellent deals. If you're not going mad with heat and light it's more likely to be the tarrif you're on.

£170ish a month for electricity here, no gas. Much, much more than I want to be spending, but unfortunately there's no way round it with where we live (7 year old housing association flat on ground floor of a block).

It is a small 3 bed flat, with just me and 2 young adult DC who come with associated phones, computers (one with 2 monitors), laptops, consoles and assorted gadgetry in their single size bedrooms. Crappy storage heaters instead of actual heating, so we use oil filled radiators instead because they actually warm the place and cost less to run, though they do get in the way. No dishwasher (no space), but do have a condenser dryer (in the hallway outside my bedroom, awkward but no room for anything and it is necessary) which is used a lot because we have no outside drying space and have not got space anywhere indoors for hanging up stuff to dry, plus our bathroom is windowless with a loud extractor that only works when the light is on in there, so would cost to dry stuff in there anyway.

£59 gas/electricity. 2 bedroom flat dating from the 1800s with non double glazed original sash windows. But surprisingly warm and holds the heat!

My electric bill is 300 euro a month.....

WalterIris · 16/04/2019 15:43

Ours is €120 per month, but €70 of that is a standing charge, so we basically have to pay €70 min per month to actually have an electric connection even if we use none. Do you have similar?

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/04/2019 15:44

Heart Sympathies, utilities are probably one of the many things that are quite cheap in the UK compared to other countries but people complain about cost of, without realising we have it pretty good.

See also food, and stamp duty when buying property.

I pay £120 a month combined for gas & electricity on a 5 bed house. How do people spend so much? We even have solid walls so hard to heat. I think we must wear thicker jumpers '

The prepayment meter usually has a display and buttons that cycle through what the display shows. There should be one that indicates if any debt is being taken. Search online or contact your supplier for the details for your particular meter; on one model it's screens "S" and "T". It's quite possible the meter is taking £5, £10, or even more per week off for a debt.

You should be entitled to a refund of any debt paid that wasn't yours. You'll probably have to chase your supplier for this.

If you're not using electricity for heating or hot water, then £100 a month is extortionate. The average for a 3 or 4 bed house is half that.

As mentioned, if the hot water is an old-style system with a cylinder, these usually have an electric immersion heater as well as the gas heat exchanger. If you intend to heat your water with gas, make sure the immersion heater is off. Gas will be much cheaper unless your boiler is total shit.

Stuck - our €120 is electric only, the oil heating bill would make you faint

Like above, utilities are very cheap in the uk, elsewhere utilities are a large monthly bill. Due to this, we are looking at solar and battery storage option in future to go off grid as it were.

We have a friend on a Spanish island, their water bill per month both for the tank and drinkable separate is more than they pay in rent per month

Hi
I used to work for a comparison company. First call the company you are with and get full details of your account what you are paying pet unit then do a comparison and switch x

Try Australia! We pay our electricity every 3 months here. Our bills range from $2000-2500 a quarter AUD. (£1200-1500)

We have such a disgusting high electricity rate in South Australia Angry I wish we only paid £100 a month Blush
