It’s my bucket list. I really want to do it for my next birthday and a friend of mine (brothers girlfriend) wants to do it too! (πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰)

My DH has decided he wants to do it... except... he can’t swim.

I’ve told him he absolutely can’t do it because he can’t swim. He said it’s fine... he can just use the apparatus and he’s in a cage... I disagree.

You need to swim right???

They are also expending energy they could be using for hunting on entertainment.

There was an outfit in Port Lincoln that used to use AC/DC music played under water to attract the Great Whites, they said that it was very different as they would approach in a 'curious' mode rather than a hunting mode so the interactions were very different.

I don't think they still do it though if Google is anything to go by.

Grey nurses, look the business but they are very chilled and quite skittish.

I've snorkelled with small wild sharks in the sea in a hot country

Yes, but not deliberately, and only very briefly. I was on holiday on Reunion island and was scuba diving with a friend when a whale shark passed by, with its mouth open. It was swimming slowly because it was feeding. Even so the sense of its power was really scary and we backed away. It was an amazing experience though, and what gorgeous creatures they are.

I wouldn't 'swim with sharks' by choice. I don't think its fair to the sharks and that kind of thrill is available without making a top predator possibly think it's got a meal, and then frustrating it.

Sorry.

I don’t think there’s any way to do cage diving with sharks in any way that’s ethical or good for the sharks.

This - please don’t do it

There is no doubt that sharks are amazing creatures, incredibly dangerous though. I am in Aus and in the early 90’s we had a family friend and Mum of 4 who was killed by a shark while diving off of a seal colony. She was a fairly small lady and obviously looked like a seal in her wetsuit and it was, for the obvious reason, the local shark drive through. Horrible. At the risk of being gross, they only recovered her leg and her husband was in the boat when it happened, with the kids. Hubby ( mine I mean) used to be a keen diver but never again after that. I tell this tale because these are wild, high order predators. Give them the widest birth possible. People tend to underestimate how dangerous large wild critters can be. Myself, I swim in pools!

We did in Thailand years ago. It was snorkelling with black tipped reef sharks (no cages) and was equally the most incredible and most scary thing I’ve ever done.
We definitely all had to be able to swim.

Please, please don't do this! It is SOOO dangerous for the sharks and deeply unethical.

They play music or throw chum to attract the sharks. Then sharks begin to associate boats and humans with food. So not only is it likely to increase shark attacks, it also increases the chance they will get caught in fishing nets.

It is so morally repugnant. There are plenty of places you can do diving and see amazing wildlife without risking killing it.

I inadvertently swam with sharks. I was happily snorkeling around a bay (pretty fishes) and came face to face with a smaller one by mistake. Definitely wild and not in any way planned. He seemed quite chilled about it and just swam away.

Your DH needs to be able to swim. The idea of going into a cage with weighted equipment and no clue makes me cringe.
