To think I shouldn’t be able to cough out a tampon

I mean seriously it’s not right is it? To almost cough out a tampon?! Stinker of a cold and throat. Every time I cough there goes a bit more pee for last week. Now period on and heavy so doubled up with tampon and pad and coughing earlier and felt like tampon was shooting down ready to come out 😱 Two children later and I’m a leaky mess 😭

On seriously note...any tips?! I try pelvic floor exercise but am useless. I can’t see doctor they wouldn’t do anything. Any devices I can use to help? Or am I going to have to accept I’ll stink of pee whenever I have a cold now (I use pads and change so sure don’t actually stink but it’s not nice either).

Oh and my other AIBU is...are we neglected in this country health wise?! Post birth I’m sure the French get physio. I don’t remember being taught about pelvic floors either? I’ll make sure to educate my DDs as this is so embarrassing.

You're right about the French, they're all about pelvic floor physio! It's great.

If you can spare the cash, buy an Elvie pelvic floor trainer, you won't regret it.

Prolapse is quite common. Don't panic. In fact unless it's really really bad the docs don't like to operate any more. There were lots of issues with the type of operation they were doing so now it's physio or nothing.

Thanks for all the info and those that shared own stories. I think because I generally don’t leak (just when cold/cough) I haven’t really focused on it. This cold has made me realise how bad it actually is so I’ll get the referral ans look up all links given. To the PP who asked my DDs are 6 and 2 and no I sont remember ever being given any pelvic floor info. Maybe at my first midwife appointment was asked if did them I said not really but I’ll start and that was end of it.

I do it and I haven’t even had kids! A colleague of mine (3dc) used to regularly tell me hers had fallen out and thank god for tights. 🤮

Funny I had a cough last month and wet my knickers a few times and coughed a tampon out too. Tbh I thought it was just normal when you got to a certain age - seems I was wrong! I need to lose weight which I'm sure would help a lot.

I have recently been to a women's physio clinic for this. Eldest DD is 19 and have had some issues with leaking when coughing since she was born. Wish I had gone sooner. The Physio was great in teaching how to do the exercises correctly - no point in doing them otherwise - and they are not easy to get right imo. I have a toner to use too - a plastic contraption that I have to insert and squeeze. Trouble is finding 20 mins a day uninterrupted to use it is not easy.

@CurlyWurlyTwirly

I think they should be as widely used as an electric toothbrush

But presumably not quite in the same way? I mean, those bristles look quite stiff...

redspottedhankie · 03/02/2019 23:21

i read this as "out of your mouth". i was seriously concerned how coughing would cause it to shoot through your body and out of your mouth!

Winterberriesonatree · 03/02/2019 23:27

Any nurse in your practice can make a referral to the local Continence service, if you cannot get a GP appointment.

Also try Gusset Grippers as others have already suggested.

I get this- always one when I sneeze if I have a full bladder etc.

But I’d rather live with it than get an internal exam. Can they do anything if I don’t get this?

buttonhead101 · 03/02/2019 23:44

The only time I've coughed so much that I wee'd (is that correct?!) a little was when I had pneumonia, it was horrible, hasn't happened again when I've coughed so maybe get yourself checked out for a chest infection? If you're coughing so badly it might not be a pelvic floor issue but a serious chest infection. I had a caesarean with my DD so don't think my pelvic floor was that badly affected but who knows. Hope you feel better soon.

Claudia1980 · 04/02/2019 11:07

You may have a cystocele, a rectocele or a prolapse. Any one of these things puts pressure into the vagina and can easily push a tampon out.

Merename · 04/02/2019 13:35

@Sarahandduck18 I recently went for the first time and physio did extensive history and chat before offering an internal, it was very much optional. Presumably helped her assess, but she already had a lot to go on from our discussion, so defo worth going. She is really lovely and I’m assuming most people who do a job like that are good at putting people at their ease.
