Aibu to leave perm job for temp job

Been approached by head of another department to cover maternity leave for a higher band and more satisfying job. My current manager will not allow me to go on secondment. Been in my current role for over 25 years and am so bored of the repetition but it is a secure public sector job. Aibu to leave for the temp job anyway and hope that I find something else by the time the person comes back from mat leave.

Do you have security if you are left with no job after?

I left a permanent job to change career and started a role that is maternity cover. I am far happier than I was before. But I have the security of another job, so if that falls through I won't be without wages

*my other job is a second job. I work part time at both to make full time hours

I would say do it. It’s exactly the type of experience you’ll need if you do apply for a permanent job at this level in the future - and it may be that this temporary job gets extended / made permanent depending on what the person on mat leave does longer term. The manager in your current job doesn’t sound hugely supportive / pro your career progression and so many interview processes these days require substantiated evidence from situations etc., so the extra experience at a higher level is so worthwhile. How easily available are jobs at your current level, if the temporary contract did end and nothing else at that level came up?

No security as my current manager will not keep my job open to go back to. So it will be a case of hoping that something else suitable comes up and that I am successful in interview. Haven’t been for an interview for over 25 years and am a little rusty.

Jobs at my current level come up quite often. Jobs at the level I will be going into not so much.

Difficult to say without knowing the industry but personally I would not leave a secure job for a temp post with Brexit looming.

Can the manager from the other department set something up to help you at all?
