To wish school jumpers were made to last???

lotusbell · 03/02/2019 18:41

5 months into high school and the cuff is fraying already! Primary school jumper was more sweatshirt material and that was bad enough. How do I fix this without resorting to the 2nd one I bought and put away? And that's Tippex on the sleeve...Hmm

Is he chewing it? Mine have never done that, I’ve only replaced when they’ve grown out of them.

JuniperBeer · 03/02/2019 18:44

Is it your DC’s only jumper? If I wore something 8h a day, 5 days a week for 5 months I’d expect a bit of fraying. Looks like they could have picked at it or pulled a thread.

whatsthepointthen · 03/02/2019 18:46

none of my kids have done that AND they only have one each!

Yura · 03/02/2019 18:47

Ours last forever - second winter, still look like new.
you can stutch across thd cuff with s loop stitch to fix it fairly easily

TheBigBangRocks · 03/02/2019 18:50

Does he only have one that he wears five days a week, I'd say that's typical wear after five months of full use.

lotusbell · 03/02/2019 18:54

I think he may have caught it on something, denying picking at it, obviously Hmm. Fair point about wearing it every day but is still expect it to last longer than a few months! Best get my needle out!

lotusbell · 03/02/2019 18:55

Yes he wears it every day, didn't want to have to crack open the second one just yet. Not cheap either!

SubparOwl · 03/02/2019 18:57

That's not good. Ours are really good quality, some of them are on their fourth year and still look fairly new.

1shotcappuccino · 03/02/2019 18:57

I have sent two back to manufacturer for repair since starting High school. Stitching came apart on v neck on one and stitching came apart at back of neck on another. They are not good quality but the school uses a specific supplier 🙄

Rubusfruticosus · 03/02/2019 19:00

I am lucky that DS has a blazer, onto its second year and still looks great. He never wears his jumper but if he did he'd likely destroy it.

lotusbell · 03/02/2019 19:10

If he's caught it on something, it's bound to fray I suppose and I can just imagine him fiddling with it. Drives me bonkers! Always been a problem. School uses a specific supplier so can't go elsewhere. So annoying!

Dermymc · 03/02/2019 19:11

How much are they?

I don't think something that gets worn almost daily for 5 months is too bad.

Chilledout11 · 03/02/2019 19:14

Honestly five days wear only one jumper!! Think that's ok

hmwhatsmynameagain · 03/02/2019 19:20

In the grand scheme of things that's not to bad, my Ds managed to detach the sleeves from his blazers within weeks each time. I sized up x3 thinking he was just broad shouldered and it still happened.
He had to suffer badly re stitched sleeves for years, I did once consider leave no rue sleeves off as the uniform rules did not state the blazer should I've sleeves bigger couldn't do that to my son

TrotEsio · 03/02/2019 19:21

One jumper for 5 days?!

Do you wash it during the week?

Mine have a clean uniform every day. Even if it's not physically dirty it smells a bit odd and of 'school'.

whatsthepointthen · 03/02/2019 19:28

My kids only have one each as I said. They wear fresh uniform everyday apart from the jumper which I see the same
as a cardigan, I dont know anyone who washes a cardigan after every wear. They are washed every other day unless
they are visibly dirty/smelly.!

goldengummybear · 03/02/2019 19:28

I suspect that your son is to blame. Ds2 is in y8 and using the same jumpers as y7. Dd is in y11 and wearing jumpers from y8. Does he chew or pick at the cuffs?

YourFly · 03/02/2019 19:31

DD has a Sainsburys & Matalan cotton cardigan & sweatshirt.

They have lasted a year. I buy them hugea bit bigger.

They still look new.

knottybeams · 03/02/2019 19:37

Really, trotesio? My mum is insane about laundry (think - irons not just towels but swimsuits 🙄) and I still had to keep my sweater clean through the week at secondary age. (4 days once I started cadets as different one on Fridays, but I was 15 by then)

Daily washing once out of primary and away from the lakes of pva glue, paint and glitter they have there is plenty.

DD starts reception in Sept and I'm dreading the increase in laundry pressure.

I wouldn’t blame your DS, both my DCs have this problem and so it seems do all the other kids at their school. The quality is just rubbish but they’ve got us over a barrel as it’s a logo’d item that we have to have and only comes from one place.

lotusbell · 03/02/2019 19:52

Exactly, fit for purpose! They aren't! It was about £20. He wears it every day, it gets a wipe if he's slopped something down the front (or put his arm in tippex). Will change his shirt midweek but not got time or inclination to wash every day. Yes, I think he picks at it but only if there is a loose thread to 'tempt' him! I'm so glad he doesn't have a blazer as well! Thanks for all the replies, maybe I am being unreasonable to expect it to be in good nick when worn every day!

Dermymc · 03/02/2019 19:54

Tbf £20 for a jumper worn daily for 5 months of school works out about 20p per wear. I doubt many other clothes are this cheap on a cost per wear basis bar pants and socks.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/02/2019 20:09

I got DD's first school jumper (actually, it was a cardigan) when she was in nursery, the year before reception - smallest size was a bit too big so it had the cuffs turned up for quite a while. It stretched a bit during washing over the years, she was still using it in about yr 3 or 4. At which point it was still perfectly wearable and went to the school 'second hand shop'.

Her first blazer lasted from reception till yr 4 too.

Both items could be washed in the evening if necessary, hung in the airing cupboard overnight and be ready for use next morning so only needed one at a time.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 03/02/2019 23:11

Is there any reason why you have one unused? We just alternate jumpers so one on and one in the wash. They still are worn the same number of times.
