To give up on natural shampoo bar after 10 days despite plastic free aim

Mashedpotatobutty · 03/02/2019 17:40

I’ve been using a natural shampoo bar for 10 days and my hair just feels disgusting. It looks clean at the roots but feels so incredibly coated I’ve had it in a bun for 10 days. I’m back at work tomorrow and thinking I need to switch to a normal shampoo to look presentable and be able to wear it down.

But if you’ve used a shampoo bar and got through this stage please feel free to share and persuade me otherwise.

Springforever, yes, but that's icky 😬

wizzler · 04/02/2019 15:07

I use the one from Yorkshire Soap company and I haven't had any problems ( other than DD nicking it)

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 04/02/2019 15:15

Those cubes cost a bomb! Bottles for us as they're cheaper. DD and I have really long hair and I have to wash mine daily (perimenopausal) or it is disgusting and there's no way I could justify spending that much on shampoo every month. Big bottles of Tres Seme for us.

MouseUtopia · 04/02/2019 15:37

I use the wild sage company one and it's fine. Hair is soft and clean with no residue. I use a silicone free conditioner about twice a week.

Calvinsmam · 04/02/2019 15:39

I tried really really hard to love them but my hair just ended up a coated waxy mess.
I went back to shampoo and conditioner :-(

ivykaty44 · 04/02/2019 15:44

Is there anywhere that refills bottle? Body shop used to back in the 70s but then stopped

Dox · 04/02/2019 15:49

I've tried a few. The lush ones are lovely and I use them all the time. The more cranky ones I tried don't lather and left my hair feeling greasy.
I haven't found a conditioner bar that I can use and have gone back to liquid.
I wonder whether the hardness of water makes a difference? We have very hard water (kettles scale up in 24 hours).

TryingMyBestToday · 04/02/2019 15:49

I like the look of the Beauty Kubes but there isn't much in stock. Definitely going to try them once they're available again. I only wash my hair 2-3 times per week so 27 cubes would last a decent amount of time.

Myusernameismud · 04/02/2019 15:53

Giggle doesn't rinsing your hair with bottled water outweigh using bottled shampoo, in terms of plastic usage?

SpringForEver · 04/02/2019 15:55

Gigglebrain, well I couldn't do it, but neither could I bear the feeling from shampoo bars, they made me feel really disgusting.

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 05/02/2019 17:52

Maybe alternate with shampoo from a plastic bottle? At least then you're cutting down on plastic use.

Slowmovingtraffic · 05/02/2019 17:56

I love the Lush shampoo bars, but cannot get on with their conditioner at all. I find it very difficult to actually get some onto my hair.

picklemepopcorn · 05/02/2019 17:57

Has anyone suggested a vinegar rinse? After a shampoo bar you should rinse with dilute vinegar. A spoon to a cup of water. It's to do with PH and it's important. You may not need to everytime, though.

poppy2021 · 05/02/2019 21:08

I use little net bags which really help the lather and stop the bars going gunky. Think shore scrunchies material
I have gone from washing my hair every day to every 3 to 4 days now Smile

poppy2021 · 05/02/2019 21:09

Shower not shore. Lol

PrismGuile · 05/02/2019 21:17

Rinse it with some apple cider vinegar to remove build up

buttyblahblah · 05/02/2019 21:22

I've tried a few and now use this one from Baaath time, my hair actually feels like hair again. Their soaps are nice too.

I've just started using this Jojoba conditioning bar from Anything but Plastic and it seems ok.

Which deodorant do you use? I think I need one without bicarbonate of soda because of having sensitive skin.

TheLette · 05/02/2019 21:26

I use the Lush Montalbano bar. Smells great, hair feels fine. Also use a solid conditioner from Lush - it's purple but I'm not sure what it's called.

bonzo77 · 05/02/2019 21:34

I’ve tried a few. For me the Bain & Savon ones have been really nice. The kids are using the coconut one and I think I’m using an orange one. They do conditioner too which is ok, though not perfect. I agree about using on scalp only, and condition very sparingly. I definitely took a while to get used to them, I’ve been using solid for about a year I think, starting with the lush ones. I really do not rate a fenugreek one from Funky somethingorother. But different strokes for different folks.

Wasywasydoodah · 05/02/2019 21:51

I gave up on the natural shampoo bars as my hair was horrible. But find the Lush ones (which contain SLS) really good. Turns out I like SLS despite not being supposed to!

MumW · 05/02/2019 22:03

I think that your hair has to get used to the new regime.

When the DC were newborn, I often went days and days without washing my hair. I eventually realised that it didn't need washing so often.
I have lots of long, thick hair which takes ages to dry naturally and I can't be arsed with blow drying. I've never gone back to washing my hair every/every other day. I wash it about once a week and it only ever looks/feels really gross if I've been ill or have migraine.

If you're serious about using the soap, then I'd stick at it for a while longer and try and wash it a little less frequently. Maybe try dropping from every day to every other or every other to every 3 days.

Twillow · 05/02/2019 22:20

Have no problem with them! Only used Lush so far. You do need a conditioner though and the bars for that are rubbish! I will try the vinegar after reading this.
Also, a previous poster said natural deodorant is rubbish - I started using a crystal stick thing I bought for my pre-teenager - it's amazing! It doesn't seem to have got any smaller after a year of use and I truly never smell sweat any more.

nutbrownhare15 · 05/02/2019 22:24

I use a lush one which has worked really well for me, only need to wash hair once a week rather than ever 2/3 days and need a tiny amount. If you get a tin it will last months. I'd suggest popping in to lush and chatting about the issues you've had so far so they can recommend one for you.

iolaus · 05/02/2019 22:41

I really like them - I do occasionally use a bottle of shampoo I feel the bars clean it more and make it less greasy

But then for me they worked from the start
