To get so annoyed reading plural words where the writer has used an apostrophe?

missmouse101 · 03/02/2019 14:51

I can't take much more of this; it ruins whatever I am reading. It has become so common and I have no idea why? Do people not want to get it right? It is puppies, families, hobbies, butchers, bakers, potatoes if you are writing about more than one. If you are writing about one (for example the puppy's paw, then the apostrophe is indeed correct.) I am probably BU in letting it affect me so much but I just had to vent!

Oh this does my head in. At my old work someone once labelled all the kitchen drawers with “cup’s”, “Pot’s” etc. I got twitchy everytime I went in.

Christmas Day was a nightmare on Facebook as well. “Merry Christmas from the Millar’s” etc. Aaaaahhh

cardibach · 03/02/2019 16:25

I would say of course good grammar is important, but tbh, I find it a chore doing it 'all properly', when it's only really necessary to do so in the work place, school, college, uni, or an important letter. Or teaching your children
I find this idea incomprehensible Engaged. If you know what is correct in order to do it for work etc, why is it harder to write correctly than incorrectly in informal situations?

Shoppingwithmother · 03/02/2019 16:26

Yes, Katsu - I had to try really hard not to say as the OP was getting a bit of rough time for her choice of trouser, without me starting on the apostrophes!

Beeziekn33ze · 03/02/2019 16:26

Has this thread escaped from Pedants' Corner? Why worry about someone who is not as well educated as you are?
Apostrophes are not difficult if initially taught correctly, this doesn't always happen. Some teachers misuse apostrophes themselves so their pupils are likely to do so too.

Macarena - Pig-thick? For not getting apostrophes correct?!

Seniorcitizen1 - Do you 'get into a rage' over spelling mistakes? Or with people who press Send or Post Message without a final careful check? I do hope not 🤣

iklboo · 03/02/2019 16:28

A (now closed) shop near us had a sign that said they sold:

'Sofa's, Bed's, Mattresse's'

I nearly imploded.

Beeziekn33ze · 03/02/2019 16:28

Jolonglegs - It's an obsession with you, is it? But you've dropped a couple yourself 🤣

MissTerryShopper · 03/02/2019 16:29

This sort of thing has me crying and rocking in a corner. I loathe it.
A shop near to me has a beautiful sign above it that reads ‘Tattoo’s’. I mean, who would ever go there and trust them?
We are buying a house and received a list which read ‘House Extra’s’. I’m not sure how I kept my composure .........

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/02/2019 16:34

Every year my Ds receives a card that says

To Jame’s

Suitcasekid · 03/02/2019 16:38

Is "butchers" actually plural, though? Or "bakers"? I know they can be (eg 20 people who are all a butcher = butchers) As in, the place you go that belongs to them. Like going to my sister's (house).???

SuziQ10 · 03/02/2019 16:58

I'm sure there are plenty of things you're not so good at, OP.
It's not very nice to be so judgemental and superior.

As for the person who said those who use grammar incorrectly are "pig thick"... wtf? Get off your high horse.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/02/2019 16:59

Point of dis ear langwage is too communication the massage. Providing that gits across, Nd it ain't not no academical paper, who gives a shiny shitey? If you're a fast reader, grammatical and punctuation mistakes put a hiccup in your reading. I find it really annoying to have to slow down and think about what the person meant to say.

So wot u uz seyin iz Ur brain dunt work proppa so u want evry1 to tipe rite so ur brain can understand. Gorrit.

Speed readers should have fewer problems reading sentance with grammatical and spelling errors. The way the brain works, as I believe studies have shown, is they'll read the first and final letter and fill in the rest.

It deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. a local business which has "craft's" written on their sign

Maybe owned by Mr or Mrs Craft?

missmouse101 · 03/02/2019 17:23

@suitcasekid, it probably wasn't the best example for me to use in my OP but they certainly can be plural, such as ' independent butchers are reporting that sales are down due to an increase in vegetarianism.' If you are talking about the single shop of the butcher in a given town, then of course it will be 'I'm going to the butcher's this afternoon.'

@suzieq10, it absolutely is NOT about being superior! I don't understand why you think that? Not for a moment do I think I'm better than anyone, but it simply is so infuriating to read and is ever increasing. Isn't it important to get it right as much as possible?

XmasPostmanBos · 03/02/2019 17:28

But you would feel so much happier if you just basked in the glow of your superior knowledge rather than letting this annoy you.

DorothyZbornak · 03/02/2019 17:29

"Potatoe's, tomatoe's" Grrr Angry
Though to be honest, I'll get over that. The one that really makes me grind my teeth is using 'of' when you clearly mean 'have'.

Obviously when I say 'you', I'm not referring to the OP.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/02/2019 17:31

I can see how you could find it annoying on an advertisement or professional paperwork.
But really some pps get enraged if they read it on a thread.
How dare the less educated comment and anger you. Ok I know it was early learning in most schools. I learnt feck all in school until I returned to education as a late teen.
imo education is wasted if you look down on others with less than you

XmasPostmanBos · 03/02/2019 17:39

I must admit it would annoy me a bit if I were Jame's though Grin

Birdsgottafly · 03/02/2019 17:40

"but it simply is so infuriating to read and is ever increasing."

Possibly because there has been an increase in posters.

This is a supportive, diverse, inclusive Parenting Forum. So there is going to be a wide range of SPAG.

It's then up to you to decide if the inclusiveness of this Forum is really for you.

Or work on your issues.

Confusedbeetle · 03/02/2019 17:42

Please stop being a grammar pedant

doIreallyneedto · 03/02/2019 17:50

@SwedishEdith - I have to proof read stuff in work and am alway writing "Plurals don't need apostrophes"

You might want to expand on that unless you want to see an outbreak of apostrophe-less possessive plurals.

Suitcasekid · 03/02/2019 18:16

@missmouse101 I wasn't criticising your example, I thought it was interesting that the subtly different context could changed the punctuation. Specifically, if you mean to don't mean the plural group of people, is it the butcher's (shop) or could it be buthers' - plural and possessive. If "doctors", I think apostrophe after the s, as there are many doctors at the practice. And 'practice' vs 'practise' is another one I've seen mentioned on here!

Suitcasekid · 03/02/2019 18:17

Oh my goodness, I just made so many mistakes in that last post. Apologies. I must proofread!

SuziQ10 · 03/02/2019 18:21

@missmouse101
Yes you are being superior.
Do you think everyone on this forum received the same level of education? The same quality of teaching? Have the same skills and competencies as you?
No.

And I don't agree that it is important to get all grammar and spelling correct on a forum for advice and support. People don't want to feel under pressure to proof read their posts each time & worry about being judged by the likes of you. Relax.
