...to ban Pingu?

Am really shocked, ds has a Pingu DVD which he watched for the first time a couple of days ago and really loves. We usually watch stuff together but I really thought this one was safe to put on for him while he sat quietly and had a drink while I whizzed round doing a few things!

...anyway, came back into the room today to watch an episode where Pingu and his little brother have lots of brightly coloured drinks then both need a pee. Little one pees on the snow and Pingu tells him off so he runs back to the igloo and jumps on the potty. Then Pingu starts hopping up and down too and runs home but the potty is occupied and Dad is in the bathroom. Eventually he gets to go into the bathroom but misses the loo - he's desperate and it's too high for him to reach without help. His parents both really tell him off for having an accident, and make him clean it up. When he goes back into the living room they give him the cold shoulder and when he goes to get some stilts to help him reach the loo, he gets told off again.
Eventually he goes and gets some cubes of ice and builds some steps.

ds is just doing potty training, he's doing great, and I think this is really counterproductive and gives a really negative message so I've banned it. The next episode showed Pingu throwing a strop at the dinner table and getting a good old fashioned over-the-knee smacking. Great stuff, as if I was in any doubt!

I thought Pingu was a cute innocent animation for little kids! Is this just a reflection on the year it was made (quite old now) and maybe the cultire of the country it was made in (it's Scandinavian I think)and am I being daft and over sensitive? ds is cross because he's not allowed to watch his new favourite any more. agh!

What about Linux. It has a penguin

Lolly68 · 03/07/2007 15:06

I didnt know Pingu was still around!! My DS use to watch it and he is 16 now!! I use to think it was great...

Jacanne · 03/07/2007 15:10

Has anyone seen the Pingu on where he steals some alcohol and throws up, or the one where he farts on the toilet

I think he may be my DP's role model.

MrBocoBurns · 03/07/2007 15:12

Pingu is great. Love it that the dad knits while the mum reads the paper.

Can we ban The Shiny Show for being budget bullshite, Me Too for being nonsense, Sarah Jane for being so pert and peculiar, and lazy town for being freaky and ugly - someone said it cost millions to make - so why do they have those characters with the rubber faces that don't move or change expression? Why? Can they not afford a couple more actual actors, - or puppets with movable faces?

KrustyTheClown · 03/07/2007 15:17

The worst one is Tots TV which is like a walking advert for Village of the Damned. I always worry about how they seem to love that donkey so much....

mother2b · 03/07/2007 15:26

its Norwegian (just thought you might like to know)

stealthsquiggle · 03/07/2007 15:34

Pingu is completely deliquent and I love him for it.

Regard it as a test of parenting - if your DC are not at some of Pingu's escapades then you are doing something wrong - DS was being very pompous the other day about an activity book where they suggest Pingu should use Pinga's potty as a hat for his snowman!

I love Pingu.
Can't stand dora.

Anna8888 · 03/07/2007 16:33

Franca - completely agree

KerryMum - it's penguin language...

NKF · 03/07/2007 16:36

Pingu is charming.

frogs · 03/07/2007 16:45

That episode of Pingu is a particular favourite with the froglets. The little yellow puddles in the snow cracks them up every time.

And they still manage to wee in the big loo, largely without incident, though dd2 did inform me that her wee had come out on the bathroom floor this morning, but it was ok because she'd wiped it up with her nighty.

suedonim · 03/07/2007 16:46

YABU. Pingu is about penguin culture and therefore is not a motif for human child rearing.

Kerrymum, the language is a made-up one, it's just gobble-de-gook. I think the creator was actually Swiss, not Scandinavian.

witchandchips · 03/07/2007 16:54

I love button moon (as does ds) but think it is deeply suspect. Mr Sppon goes off to sort out problems in distant lands as these poor funny creatures can't possibly sort out their own lives. Mrs Spoon stays at home to do all cleaning and childcare [but may get ride of Mr Spoon's rocket -arf arf] as a special treat.

christywhisty · 03/07/2007 18:44

I remember when that episode was banned in the some parts of the US because of the weeing.

I love Pingu

bellabelly · 03/07/2007 19:00

mozhe · 03/07/2007 20:42

Pingu ! A massive favourite of my 1 year old DTs....they have given their newborn,( and v.prem....775grms !!), brother their Pingu DVD for a welcome present...so far we haven't even een him with his eyes open !!! so may be a while until he gets round to watching it

Tortington · 03/07/2007 20:49

what a pile of old shite - really dear if pngu affects your children so atonishingly - then your parenting skills have a lots to be desired.

wrinklytum · 03/07/2007 20:50

YABU

Pingu is the only thing that kept me (relatively) sane during the early months of constant bf no 2 with a livewire toddler vying for attention.

As far as kiddies programmes go it is one of the best.

My younger brother who is a layabout student, also rates it highly

Tamum · 03/07/2007 20:53

Oh I love Pingu, and the peeing episode is one of my all-time favourites. Ds absolutely loved it and he is now a fully trained 12 year old.

MrsCurly · 03/07/2007 20:57

I was at Heathrow once with my daughter who was then two and she was entranced watching an elderly Indian couple chatting to each other and she said very loudly, "Look Mum! They speak Pingu!"

francagoestohollywood · 03/07/2007 21:20

It got banned in the US !?!

maisym · 03/07/2007 21:28

my kids love pingu - apart from the scary pingu when he goes off after a row with his parents!

christywhisty · 03/07/2007 21:31

Think it was only this episode and only in certain States, probably the more evangelical ones, because of the weeing scenes.
