to ask how long you can have a tiny baby outside for

In really cold weather?

I live rurally and have a small (12lb) 3 month old. I've read so much about keeping them warm that I'm scared to go out

How does everyone else manage? Would a 45 minute walk be too long even if they're wrapped up?

I'm not being precious I genuinely just don't know what is and isn't okay :(

In places like Norway, babies are wrapped up warm and left outside in their prams to sleep in conditions as cold as -10.

formerbabe · 02/02/2019 21:00

Do you have a snow suit with mittens? A baby properly dressed in a long sleeved/leg babygro with a padded snow suit with mittens and a hat/hood would be totally fine outside in the UK in winter. Don't be too scared to go out Flowers

APurpleSquirrel · 02/02/2019 21:01

Would the baby be in the peak/pushchair/sling?

NorthernLurker · 02/02/2019 21:02

Wrapped up and in a sling will be fine for that time

FamilyReferee · 02/02/2019 21:02

When my DC was small, I had them out every day in even the coldest weather - just wrapped up appropriately. I live/work rurally, but DC used to come to work with me. The biggest problem I had was keeping socks on - they used to keep on removing them even in the coldest weather!

Not only did I have them dressed warmly, but I bought a liner for the buggy which was like a sleeping bag, sort of.

feeona123 · 02/02/2019 21:03

Lots of layers, fresh air will do them good!

babydreamer1 · 02/02/2019 21:04

Just wrap up warm and you'll be fine, I take 4 month old DS out for a walk every day and have done since he was a few weeks. He wears a long sleeved vest, top or baby grow, if it's very cold I add a cardi under and the. A coat or snowsuit with a hat and a hood, then a blanket and the bassinet cover. He's lovely and toasty and mainly goes to sleep. Just remember to take the layers off if you go inside as you don't want them to overheat. Fresh air and sunlight is very good for them.

Schmoobarb · 02/02/2019 21:04

If there’s properly wrapped up they’ll be fine. They’ll soon start squawking if they’re not happy!

BikeRunSki · 02/02/2019 21:06

Agree with everyone else. Wrap him up and go out!

Ellieboolou27 · 02/02/2019 21:06

And a hat! This week I’ve seen so many newborns with no hats 😖

Idonotlikeyoudonaldtrump · 02/02/2019 21:07

When you have more than one child, you can’t keep the older ones in all day. Babies are fine however long they’re out as long as they’re wrapped up. Bush baby fleece suits are great or jo jo mamma bebe do a lovely one that’s thin enough for a sling. Don’t put them in a snowsuit in a sling.

Slings are great because your body heat keeps them warm. If you can master breastfeeding in the sling that helps too.

Honestly, baby will be fine. 45 minutes is nothing. They can be out all day and be ok. If you’re not breastfeeding you might have to find somewhere warm to feed. But that’s it.

SnuggyBuggy · 02/02/2019 21:07

People have babies in colder climates than here. I've been using a carrier and a coat with enough slack to cover both of us. As people have said babies tend to whinge when too cold

DrQuinnMedicineWoman · 02/02/2019 21:08

I have a very small 5 month old (12lb) and she sleeps a lot better if we're outside. It's been -7 here so she's had vest, sleepsuit, knitted cardigan and a fleecy snowsuit and knitted bonnet hat on. She goes in the pram that has a lovely fleece lined cosytoes. She's a nightmare for naps unless she's being pushed in the pram so we're out walking twice a day at least and she's never been cold. When we come inside I unzip the cosytoes and the snowsuit so she doesn't overheat

PodgeBod · 02/02/2019 21:08

Baby will be fine if wrapped up well, but if it's going to cause you a lot of worry then keep them inside (if the walk is non-essential)

Myusernameismud · 02/02/2019 21:10

Both my DCs napped in the pram, for an hour at a time, outside until they were a year old (unless it rained). 45 mins is fine as long as baby is wrapped up well. In a pram with the hood up they'll be protected from all but the fiercest of winds.

Kpo58 · 02/02/2019 21:12

What are you taking your baby for a walk in? If you are using a pram, you can always put the rain cover on as a windbreak and as a way of trapping warm(er) air.

Nutellaoneverything · 02/02/2019 21:14

Here in Sweden children are outside every single day, whatever the weather. The saying here is "there's no such thing as bad weather, only badly clothed" probably not translated correctly, but as long as a child is dressed properly then they can be outside for hours. We get -25C by the way

PippilottaLongstocking · 02/02/2019 21:15

Several thinner layers (wool is best) are better than one thick snowsuit for keeping warm. Also if you use a sling baby will have your body heat to keep them warm too. If in a pram then a warm blanket, or cosy toes type thing. My boy was tiny last winter and I’d put him in a short sleeved merino vest with a long sleeved one on top, wool blend tights (from H&M I think) then a romper over the top of that all, then a wool all-in-one (but fleece is also good for the outer layer) then in the sling, with wool felt knee-high booties because his feet poked out.

Dreamingofkfc · 02/02/2019 21:18

Wear a baby in a sling, they'll defo be warm enough

anniehm · 02/02/2019 21:23

People used to put them to sleep outside, I read it still happens in Norway. Snowsuit or lots of blankets but do ensure you don't overdress them - babies overheat too!

anniehm · 02/02/2019 21:24

Ps we took dd2 skiing at 4 weeks old in a front carrier!

ItsMEhooray · 02/02/2019 21:26

Cool air is good for them! Wrap up warm, throw a nice blanket round them and stick a hat on and you can head out a good couple of hours.

Amanduh · 02/02/2019 21:28

As long as you like within daily life... like, not 19 hours by a frozen lake. The rest is fine!

sparklesq · 02/02/2019 21:28

I echo the PPs mentioning Norway where it is normal for nurseries to put sleeping babies outside in the fresh air. They say "there is no bad weather, only bad clothing". A well wrapped up baby will be fine outside as long as you are!

halfwitpicker · 02/02/2019 21:28

Honestly they'll be fine.

Live in Canada (I know, there's always one, right) and we go out at minus 10, as long as they're bundled up really well they love it.
