to think hairdressers should try and make their clients feel good

Just that really. Really don't like the tendency of some hairdressers to start lecturing you without being asked about using more conditioner because your hair looks frizzy or is damaged.
Yes I know I look rubbish that's why I'm trying to do something about it!

And I find male hairdressers the worst for this - I’ve had a couple in the past who were clearly very disappointed that they’re reduced to cutting my (quite average) hair and not dealing with supermodels as they obviously think they should be 😂

ilovecherries · 02/02/2019 17:44

When I was losing my hair for the nth time a few years ago, my hairdresser made me feel like total shite. There were occasions when I left in tears, and because I was so distraught and embarrassed by my hair loss, I couldn’t face a new one. With hindsight, I was the dream client. Bought every crappy product they offered me as ‘the solution’, had an expensive cut and colour every six weeks to try and conceal the every growing bald bits. The best thing I ever did was shave the rest off and move to wig wearing. No more sarky hairdressers.

camelfinger · 02/02/2019 17:49

I think they get annoyed if you don’t go every 6 weeks and if you don’t buy any overpriced products. I’ve been having my hair cut and styled for enough years to know that it will look shit as soon as I’ve washed it unless I’m wiling to spend an hour styling it each time. So I’m happy to have it look good for a couple of days and then back to being mediocre.

rookiemere · 02/02/2019 17:49

This has happened to me at the beauty salon. I go there to get laser treatment for my hairy chin so when there i'm already feeling pretty low about my appearance. I've had botox suggested pretty often, and once a lady said she'd love to get to grips with my big pores. Total attempt to upsell and a bit annoying.
Yes I have some wrinkles- this is because i'm in my forties.

Mummadeeze · 02/02/2019 17:51

Agreed. I went to one hairdresser and said I wanted my hair cut short and she said ‘I’m not doing that because you will look like a boy!” I was shocked and told her I am the client and I know how I like it and if I want it short, she should cut it short. She huffed and puffed and cut it short under duress until she finally finished and said ‘actually I can see why you wanted it now, it does look alright’ almost in surprise. As you can imagine, I never went there again!

Jackshouse · 02/02/2019 17:53

LostInShoebiz which shampoo and conditioner please?

LostInShoebiz · 02/02/2019 18:13

Brilliant Brunette. She recommended that every second wash and now I don’t have any colour when I go to her (no greys yet obviously). It’s been a very pleasant surprise how good it’s been and as a longtime Philip Kingsley devotee I’m loving the much reduced cost. Honestly, my hair is so shiny it’s like a mirror.

PickAChew · 02/02/2019 19:24

I lobe the brilliant brunette conditioner (even though my hair is much less brunette, these days!) it leaves my coarse hair really sft and shiny, without being too heavy.

I use lush daddy O shampoo, though.

AgathaRaisinsCat · 02/02/2019 19:51

Hairdresser told me that it must be incredibly difficult to get a colour that would work with 'your pale, pasty skin' - definitely not going back there.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/02/2019 19:56

My hairdresser is lovely and always so complementary even though my hair is a curly disobedient nightmare and hard to tame. She said that she quite enjoys it, as most of the ladies who come to the salon have the opposite problem with fine, thin hair. It’s a family owned place and everyone is delightful.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/02/2019 20:14

My hairdresser is lovely but it took awhile to find her.
She is warm friendly and listens to my requests.
My previous experience in a new saloon had put me off for life, She chatted to the stylist beside her, instead of 2 Brown 1 blonde she done the opposite, I told her was fair but she left bleaching on to long it was bright yellow, then charged me 20 for a toner, she must have mentioned the shampoo for sale a million times, advising how much my hair badly needed their products.
My new one has my full commitment for life and she is good value too.

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 03/02/2019 01:09

YADNBU! This is a big part of why I stopped going to the hairdresser and started cutting my own hair, aided by youtube videos!

I have no idea why they do it, I've got reasonable hair but they'd always do the "Who cut your hair last?" thing (with a disgusted look) and "Do you swim a lot? Your ends look like they've been frazzled by chlorine" (that's why I've booked a haircut...)

If I were a hairdresser I'd be trying to find something - anything! - nice to say about a client's hair to make them feel good so they'd want to come back!

londonginge · 03/02/2019 01:17

A hairdresser once told me he hated doing boring haircuts on long hair like mine, he prefers edgier haircuts like the girl who had just left - looking like a mushroom may I add!

halfwitpicker · 03/02/2019 01:27

Same here.
I nearly cried one time at a salon in Liverpool. Feckin bitch.

The woman I see now is lovely though, she's usually cutting little old ladies hair, I think she's just pleased to see someone under 80 so she doesn't tell me off! Takes 10 minutes, bit of inane chit chat, £20,done.

halfwitpicker · 03/02/2019 01:30

"Who cut your hair last?" thing (with a disgusted look)

^

Yup.... Me too. What do they hope to achieve by saying this? Or to reply 'Oh, some halfwit frigging stylist down the street, but now i've finally seen the light and have come to see you?

I think not.

Turquoisetamborine · 03/02/2019 01:57

That’s why I love my hairdresser. She’s a lovely person and always puts me at ease and would never be so rude. I can’t stand bitchy people in any profession.

Stormy76 · 03/02/2019 02:07

A good hairdresser won’t do a hard sell

pollyglot · 03/02/2019 04:16

Mine is lovely. Losing my hair following a trauma, I'm always pampered and shampooed and massaged, and leave with a lovely cut and a smile. She also charges one third of what I used to pay in the city, before I moved to our remote village.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/02/2019 20:26

OMG I can't believe I forgot this, but I got called a divy by stylist in
Avant garde. (I have absolutely no qualms at all with naming them, BTW) during a consultation, because I didn't understand something. I.didn't say anything or complain though.

It was my younger day when I was appallingly shy and wouldn't say boo to a goose. I'd eat the bitch for breakfast now. No 2 ways about it.

Needless to say I gave my custom to a different salon. A back street Salon who were absolutely lovely and grateful for my custom, and made mW feel very welcome.

Moana19 · 05/02/2019 18:39

I wish there was a hairadvisor (TripAdvisor but hair type website) as its difficult to know where to go and horrible when you get treated like when your bringing them custom and spending your hard earned money there.

proseccoaficionado · 06/02/2019 08:59

@UnreasonablyPissedOff I'm howling😂😂😂😂😂

Buddytheelf85 · 06/02/2019 09:25

I agree OP. I rarely go to the hairdresser because I resent paying a lot of money for an experience I rarely enjoy - particularly the chat about the state of your hair which leads to a hard sell on some ridiculously overpriced products (‘I’ll just leave these here for you to look at!’)

I don’t understand why premium hairdressers don’t get that they are selling an experience as well as a service. I’m not going to come back if I didn’t enjoy the overall experience.

TheGoddessFrigg · 06/02/2019 09:32

YADNBU. it's like a form of begging - so you'll keep going back to them. I have hair loss due to steroids and illness, and the stylist made me feel even worse. And then gave me a cut that was a hommage to Blackadder series 1! I'm still looking for a new one.

GemmeFatale · 06/02/2019 09:53

I’d like one willing to make a suggestion. You’re the expert in hair, you can see my face and hair type. I want low maintenance, and stylish - what do you suggest?

Oh let’s keep it long and put some layers through!

So exactly the hair cut I currently have and don’t look stylish with then? Awesome expertise there.
