DS is 2.
He's had a cough for 6/7 weeks that hasn't really bothered him and been quite minor.
About a week ago, my good sleeper started getting distressed 70% of the night and crying hysterically in intervals and we couldn't figure out what was wrong.
On Thursday, he had a minor convulsion due to his temperature being 40+. Took in an ambulance to A&E. (This was at lunchtime and apart from the no sleeping and cough, no other symptoms that morning, he was happy).
He had mottled skin, breathing heavier and shaking (in a shivering way).
Ibuprofen and paracetamol brought his temperature down and he was playing.
They did urine tests, a chest X-Ray, looking in his ears and checked in his mouth (no bloods), and waited for his temp to go back to normal.
They said it was a throat infection and discharged us - with the advice to give Calpol every 6 hours and Nurofen every 8.
He's having both painkillers in the morning, Calpol again just after lunch, Nurofen at tea and Calpol at bedtime.
At just after lunchtime yesterday and today, he's completely deteriorated (literally just when the Calpol is due).
Yesterday, he had another minor convulsion and got better when he had early Nurofen (paediatricians advice, they said they wouldn't worry).
Today, he was just very cold and shivering and grabbing his mouth in pain. He's asleep now.

I've rang them again and they've said it's all normal but I'm just not sure and feel like they're making me feel crazy! I've posted before about this too because I'm just getting panicked. They're insisting that this is normal with a throat infection and all signs pointing to that and it's all okay but I'm not sure how to believe it's definitely a throat infection!

He's telling me (in actions) that his hands are sore and his mouth is sore (can't tell if it's his lips but I think it's his tongue). His skin is still slightly mottled with a blotchy red rash that's just come up on his chin/neck. He's his happy self most of the time but in this period at lunchtime where he's just having Calpol and not another dose of Nurofen, he completely deteriorates.

Should I be pushing harder or just accepting what they're saying given he's happy and playing 70% of the day? He was up a lot of last night grabbing his mouth and ears in pain.

Sorry about the long post Sad

Quinsy? Dc has one & it was missed several times by several doctors. Convulsions as well. Eventually diagnosed by a locum & really strong antibiotics given. I’d be back to A&E if I was you.

Thinking of you it’s horrid when they are so unwell.

brizzledrizzle · 02/02/2019 16:01

I'd to A&E, if you phoned in with those symptoms a doctor worth her salt would want the child to be seen.

Jackshouse · 02/02/2019 16:06

If you don’t agree with a diagnosis then always seek a second opinion.

KitschBitch · 02/02/2019 16:07

Straight to A & E, best to be sure.

ChristmasFlary · 02/02/2019 16:10

I think it does still point towards an infection. Not necessarily a throat but as other's have said HFM.

Both my boys had that. Ds2 was still a baby and got the most awful nappy rash.... except it wasn't...it was the virus.

Crunchymum · 02/02/2019 16:14

Did you have a similar thread to this yesterday?

SeaToSki · 02/02/2019 16:14

A and E. It sounds bacterial, he will need antibiotics. And just to make it even more real for you, bacterial throat infections that arent treated can shed bacteria that lodges in the heart and cause rheumatic heart disease (permananently damages the heart valves). Please take him to get blood work at an absolute minimum. They can tell if he is fighting a virus or a bactrial infection from how the white blood cells are reacting.

PurpleWithRed · 02/02/2019 16:16

Can you take him to A&E? NICE guidance is to seek medical help if you are becoming more worried about your child, and it sounds as though you have good reason to be concerned.

BudgiePie · 02/02/2019 16:17

My daughter had all these symptoms with:
Throat infection
UTI
chicken pox
Ear infection.

Take him back to docs/ A&E asap

Quartz2208 · 02/02/2019 16:19

Is the blotchy rash sandpaper like that is scarlet fever
Or it could be hand foot and mouth if he has blisters

Or calpol isn’t good at keeping temperature down and that what makes him detoriate and it’s a virus that is going to take time to work through his symptoms

Does he perk up sepsis is a downward spiral of not having up moments

piggybrownhare · 02/02/2019 16:52

Why so long between doses of calpol? If mine had temps like that I would give calpol every 4 hrs and ibrofen I’m between ... that means if u give calpol at 7, 11, 3 and 7 so ibrofen in between if necessary and ibrofen in the night.... I would see out of hours doc if u are worried

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 02/02/2019 17:00

It may well be hand foot and mouth but that doesn't mean it's minor. I looked after a child who ended up hospitalised because of it. Call out of hours any doctor would be happy to see a 2yr old I'm sure...mention the rash.

Confusedbeetle · 02/02/2019 17:03

You really should be getting medical advice not MN who cannot diagnose. If you are worried, do something

MrsEricBana · 02/02/2019 17:08

Definitely A&E. Better to be thought over anxious than not go and regret it. Really hope he's on the mend soon.

bumbleymummy · 02/02/2019 17:37

That sounds very worrying. I hope you’ve taken him back to the doctor. Don’t worry about wasting people’s time - you’re worried and he’s gotten worse.

GalacticChickenShit · 02/02/2019 17:40

Hope you've sought further advice.

MashaBear1 · 02/02/2019 17:51

I would go to A&E. Hope all is ok

jaseyraex · 02/02/2019 17:51

Did you post about this yesterday as well, OP? The fact he's deteriorating is concerning and I'd take him to A&E wether they say so or not. It'll probably be a different team anyway. Better to be a waste of time than your poor DS getting worse and worse. I do hope it's no worry in the end. X

gnomas · 02/02/2019 17:55

Thanks everyone - yes, I did post about it yesterday too for everyone asking. We've been up to the out of hours doctor, but because he's improving so much after doses of Nurofen they're not really concerned. He's his normal self when he's had it it's just the hour or two prior to his dose being due that he deteriorates so fast. They've said that if he is still battling a high temperature tomorrow then to bring him back as that'll be 3 days.

This, instead of reading a 100 guesses of what it could be.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 02/02/2019 18:50

Don't give him the nurofen, take him back to the doctor again.

user1466690252 · 02/02/2019 18:56

I would take him to a &e ours is really good and on the ball with sepsis. I’ve had to go twice with dc2 this year for similar to you and they have been very thorough. The dr didn’t pick up on it, not his fault he just didn’t have the time to do the obs. Ended up on strong antibiotics both times and he improved instantly. I would go for peace of mind if nothing and it is better to be safe than sorry. I am one of those who don’t like to bother drs ect if I don’t feel necessary aswell. It’s just different with little kids

YeOldeTrout · 03/02/2019 08:12

update, OP?

user1496086735 · 03/02/2019 15:05

Hi,

I have logged onto here to reply especially to this post. The symptoms that your son are having sound very alarming. Please go to A and E again. The symptoms, including the seizures, appear to match those of meningitis.

Please update us x
